I just don't see any around here, so I'm not sure about a fair price. Emailed the guy and said the reserve is set at $3500. Any thoughts? Not sure why it was freshly painted.

Painted with a brush, ouch. Around here, that's a $1500 truck unless they can show stuff that's been rebuilt on it.
The brushed on paint really hurts it.

Zero. Rust through like that means there is more (and likely more serious) rust elsewhere.

Who pooped on it, Donald Trump? $3500 is way too high. If it was a nice truck, then $3000 maybe. But I paid $1350 for my half-ton. And you can look it up on Youtube. It's in my siggy.

I used CL for mine, talked him down from the original $1500-$1800 he was after.

or he only sanded the bondo in one direction?stopped at 80 grit for the paint to stick?

Wow ya it looks like hell to me haha just saying! I am betting he painted it to cover up rust and other problems it had. I would defiantly pass up on that thing. I would try Craigslist for sure I have had great luck there

I guess I am a pessimist when it comes to old trucks. I have always listened to guys who say: "I paid $500 for my truck and drove it for 150,000 miles and never put a penny into it - doesn't owe me a thing" - but I have never had that experience. I have owned three old squares and they all required significant $$ to get them/keep them in good repair and reliable drivers. I could have driven them with bad brakes/tires, etc., and I would probably be dead now from an accident due to vehicle defects.
So, when evaluating old trucks for sale, I expect that repairs will be required and factor that into the value of the vehicle. Unless you have a desperate need for specific parts which are known to be good on the vehicle you are buying, and plan to scrap the rest of the vehicle, I think you should expect repairs will be required.
On the other hand, there are many nice old trucks out there which have had good care from their owners (mine is now one of them) which will need few repairs because everything has been repaired already. I think a lot of posters here have trucks like that, but you can expect to pay $4- $5K minimum for these trucks and significantly more if the cosmetics are real nice. Compared to $20K + for a new truck these are not bad trucks for your money, but I would still not call them "an investment", since all vehicles are money wasters.
Still, an old vehicle is a wellspring of surprises, and every day is a new adventure.

Agreed with 100%. I've owned a '75 (which was robbed from me by someone who rear-ended it two hours after purchasing) and now an '81. Both C10 Silverado's. I only ended up putting $81 into the '75. As soon as I bought it, it needed a new tail light cover on the passenger side, the driver side needed electrical work to make it light up, the carb needed adjusting (I'm still learning how to take care of my own rig myself, but at that time I just knew it started lol), and it needed a master brake cylinder installed with the brakes bled. Then I get it back and wham, totaled. Now with my '81, I spent $1350 for it and so far I've put about $600-700 into it (if we wanted to get technical and include the 5 oil changes it's had in one year. I messed up and put synthetic into it and in one day, destroyed ALL of the seals on my motor, so I'm saving to get that fixed). I've had to put on new valve covers, a new battery, new intake manifold, new carb, breather kit, and up soon I still need to replace the dizzy, plugs and wires, replace all the seals in the motor, put a new fuel pump on it, replace the fuel filter in the tank, put new rubber on it, new rotors and lugs and studs since those are rusted, I need to replace my ghetto exhaust I did, which should have been done last Christmas, and then it needs paint and a new front windshield with built in antennae for the radio. Overall when I do get to play around with it a bit, I plan on putting at least $20,000 to completely rebuild it. That way I'd have, basically, a truck with 0 miles on it, looks exactly how I want it, performs better than the newer trucks, and doesn't look like it's from the showroom floor, all for the measly price of $21,950-$30,000. Which I don't think is too bad, but this truck here. I don't think it's going to survive with how it was abused...
