working on HIS truck
Chevjayfsd posted a thread about his 2 year old, and how much he loved his old truck. Those pics definately reminded me of my own son, and how much he loves spending time in the garage with me and going for a ride in the 67. I just had to share a little story with you guys from when I was out in the garage working on mine.
A few of weeks ago i had to swap out the bushings in my rack and pinion from the rubber ones for some billet ones from Porterbuilt, adn of corse my son had to come out in the garage with me. We got our tools and parts organized, and started to work with Ayden watching every move I made. I jacked up my truck, set jackstands under it, and rolled under the front end on my creeper. My son squatted down by the front bumper, watching me and and asking a thousand questions about what I was doing. When I got finished, I jacked the truck up, pulled the jackstands, and set the truck back on the ground and then leaned over the engine bay to swap out the spark plugs in the motor for some new ones. This is about the time i heard a thump thump thump sound, and all i could think of was him hitting the 67 with something. I looked over and he was pushing my jack under his John Deere Gator (not a real one, but a small electric ride on toy) and proceeded to jack the front end into the air. He then pointed to the jack stnds and said "Daddy I need some of those!" So I helped him put them under his truck, and chocked the rear wheels. He grabbed a couple of his plastic play tools and my creeper, and slid under his truck and proceeded to pretend to work on things. I asked him what he was doing, and he stated "Im working on my lowrider just like my daddy!" To say I was a little bit proud was an understatement. he did all of this unprompted, completely on his own. Spending time with him in the garage or just cruising the neighborhood or at a local show has given me some of the best memories, and we have had the best time playing together. He already knows what a welder, grinder, screwdriver, wrench, pliers, ect are, and has his own set of plastic ones (yes, a grinder and welder too!, and even his own play welding mask) so he can work on his stuff just like I do. At this rate he will be a hotrodder for sure. Here are a couple of pics of that day, hope you guys enjoy. |

Re: working on HIS truck
Great story Colin. My son is the same way. I caught him doing this a couple years ago with his Grave Digger.
And of course, his little brother had to follow suit on a later date. Not trying to hijack your thread, but trying to add to it. Kids are great. I learned to work on cars and trucks by helping my dad, and both my boys are learning by watching me. It's good you're enjoying the time you have with him.

Re: working on HIS truck
Those pics are awesome! No worry about hijacking, the more the merrier. I love hearing stories like that! I am in no hurry for mine to grow up, but I do look forward to his 12th or 13th birthday. My wife and I have already decided that we will buy him a car for his birthday on one of those, but with 2 stipulations:
1: It HAS to be at least 30 years old 2: It cannot run and drive, HAS to be towed home And Im thinking of adding a third, for the fear he decided he wants some overpriced musclecar that just a body full of rust would cost seveal thousands of dollars 3: It has to be a truck Then he can work on it in the garage with me, and do things like cut grass and such to earn the money for parts, and I will match whatever he earns. That way he will have built his first car, will learn something (alot actually) about how to work on your own automobiles, and maybe he will appriciate it and not wrap it around a pole within the first few months of owning it. When you build something yourself, for some reason it definately makes you a more cautious driver. Besides, that father/son time in the garage will be some of the best experences we will have together. |

Re: working on HIS truck
Very cool story! My dad taught me all about cars and trucks the same way. Priceless! I'm 50 now and I am still working on them and learning.

Re: working on HIS truck
love the trucks and kids, they are awesome, have no pics, just a couple of stories about my 4 year old niece who comes over and helps me, she is always there to hand me stuff, she is nothing but pure country. At her 4th b'day party she opened a baby doll stroller and said: "oh, cool, its a wheelbarrow" , the other day she was looking for some spray paint to paint leaves and we had to get some out of my 4x6 enclosed trailer that is painted camo green, when she finally spotted the trailer in the woods she said: "uncle Mike, is that a deer stand?" she is super funny and a good little helper,

Re: working on HIS truck
my now 4 year old, Maya has to be in the garage with me everytime I roll out the tool box. She'll grab a wrench or a screwdriver and go to one of the tires and "fix" it for me or she' tighten up bumper for me. I love it. she makes me laugh watching her being like her daddy. but like a girl as soon as her hands get dirty she has to wipe em on my shirt!

Re: working on HIS truck
My little girl was helping me change tires at 4 years old. She's 8 now, and this video seems like it was yesterday. My little boy loves Daddy's old trucks too!

Don't wish too hard bud, cause if you blink, they've grown up on you. I know what you're saying, though!

Re: working on HIS truck
no real recent work together on the 67 but He knows we still own it. ... when we wash vehicles he takes his time doing the rims and tires right if he helps.
he knows the hood by side of house I braught home the other day goes on the 67 sometime. ...... he is so easy to hang out with, .... kids are so easy to talk too, they are so innocent and unpolluted. great thread and topic. life is good, kent
