exhaust sound differences??

so on my 72 the exhaust goes from headers (duh) to dual flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers and thats it... no tail pipes after the muffler. I like the sound but it can be loud dumping straight out the mufflers under the truck. My question is of much of a change will it make in sound and quality sound if I dump out the side before of after the tire or even out the back... ANY ONE HAVE SOUND CLIPS OF BEFORE AND AFTER from mufflers to tailpipes?

Re: exhaust sound differences??

figured so, just thought it would get better as far as in the cab with it dumping out the side or rear with a few feet of tail pipe, thats all...

Re: exhaust sound differences??

dumped under the vehicle makes it loud inside, and quieter outside.
Dumping it outside the vehicle will make it louder outside, but quieter inside.

Re: exhaust sound differences??

Another thing to consider if you are trying to dampen the sound & vibration that carries in to the Cab is the type of exhaust hangers being used, this makes a BIG difference. Obviously the rubber mounted type hangers are best, Rubber J-Hooks are great too, the worst are the metal L-Brackets with just the small round rubber exhaust grommets, these do little to nothing to dampen interior noise from your exhaust.

Hmmm, never noticed.... this at idle or under full throttle or cruising speed... or all

Re: exhaust sound differences??

at all speeds.
It's not as bad if they dump out midway back under the bed, and obviously, it's worse if they dump right under the cab.
The pipe takes the noise and throws it out where ever the pipe ends... end it under neath, and it just echos around under the vehicle. Even with turndowns, it still 'bounces' right back up to the floor of the truck. Throw the noise out behind the truck with a full set of pipes, and you'll be amazed at how many other 'new noises' you'll pick up on.
It increases driving pleasure a lot when your head isn't being abused with reverbaration and resonating sounds.

Re: exhaust sound differences??

To add those flowmasters are just plain loud mufflers.I went with a full Magnaflow stainless system and it has a quiet rumble when cruising and a pretty good bark when you open it up.I like it way better than the Flowmasters I had before. But everyone has different tastes.

Re: exhaust sound differences??

I just fixed the same problem your having. I have long tube headers and FM super 40's, it would resonate through the whole truck, you could'nt think much less have a conversation. I cut 4" holes through the crossmember(the one with the carrier) and had it bent out to go in front of the rear tires. My truck has a 8' box and after the crossmember it goes from 2.5 to 2-1/4 but the difference is unreal much quieter. Its probably only 4' more of pipe on each side but now i can hear what my wifes saying

I think I "May" be able to help you.
I'll post a video here. Its my 72 GMC with Flowmaster 40's and the pipes dump out in FRONT of the rear tire.
My 350 is stock.
I was cruising at 55-60mph with 3.73 Gears and a Turbo 350.
I was not "getting on it", just cruising.

Re: exhaust sound differences??

he thanks all, and I agree the flows are just loud. They would not be my first choice however they did come with the truck along with two 3 chamber flows..... so i am stuck with them cause I don't want to spend too much on the exhaust...
