Best Manual For 230 Rebuild

Which manual would you recommend for someone to follow who has never rebuilt a Chevy straight 6 engine? I am about to pull my engine and start a rebuild under supervision, but I would like to have a good manual to supplement. What do you recommend?

Also, I see the FSMs, but which one will help me through a rebuild of a 230?

Thumbs up Re: Best Manual For 230 Rebuild

There are alot of folks on here can help you on this.

Also try looking for a Chilton's or Haynes auto/truck repair manual etc..

Re: Best Manual For 230 Rebuild

I have the reproduction shop manual for the '63, and it covers just about everything. However, my father has a Haynes for his 87, and I find that his book details and describes how to do things much better. It's actually the same one shown in the photo above.

Personally I'd go with a Chiltons or Haynes, as the '63 shop manual can be 'frustrating' at times in my opinion. I need to find one for my '63, thanks for reminding me.

Re: Best Manual For 230 Rebuild

As always, thanks for the great info, 1bad62!!!

Ok, new update. Looks like my engine is actually a 250 and not a 230 like I thought previously.

Also, I went to the Haynes site and they don't seem to offer a book for the 60-66 Chevy pickup, and the Chilton site is all online. I don't see that they publish a manual for this truck. Am I insane? They all seem to start at 1970 or so.

Also, I am looking for a basic engine rebuild manual for the 250. The closest thing I can find for this so far is the Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual. My aim is really to just rebuild this as a stock engine, not to soup it up. Will this book still work for me? Do the Factory Service Manuals show how to do a basic rebuild?
