Brakes???? who needs emm?

Obviously my truck doesnt think it does.. driving to work today and the brake peddle drops to the floor when i step on it to stop......have to stand on the thing to get it to stop. get home tonight and check brake fluid... bone dry.. not even a trace... start checking lines... wouldnt you know it.. right rear brake line that runs along the axle blew a hole....GREAT! so along with working 7am-8pm tomorrow i get to for one.. drive is like it is... then find time to fix it!.....


how much does the brake line cost? hard to bleed the brakes? have to have someone help right? sorry never done brakes before... sounds like i am about to get quite a bit of practice.. truck... and then tbird..

I’m an amature and replaced my without a problem. Took the old line to Advanced auto and found the closest match. With a good bit of penetrating oil it went smooth.

I think I spent 20 bucks for the line and 2.00 for the Brake fluid. I had help bleeding the brakes but would like to look into a one man bleeding tool soon.

The one man bleeding tool is easy. All you need is a container and some clear vinyl tubing. Attach the hose to the bleeder and submerge the other end in a container of brake fluid. Make sure the free end of the tube is completely submerged in fluid.

You can crack the bleeder and bleed the brakes like normal. The clear tubing lets you see the air bubbles. Bleed the brakes until the air bubbles disappear.

well got the new line on and bleed the brakes, but still no pedal pressure. not real sure whats up.........

lines are cheap like $18 the fluid is like $1.99 and the hard part is making sure ya dont bust off a bleeder screw its like an hour job if that get a good set of ramps back her up on there and youre home free
ya can always use the emergency brake to stop drove a fiat 300 miles like that years ago

you probably need to bench bleed your master cylinder since you ran it dry. to do so, put it in a bench vice, and run some tubing from each of the hose connections, back into the reservoir.. so it makes a big loop, then using a screwdriver, push the plunger in until there is no more bubbles or anything..

if you buy a new master cylinder it will come with the hose and fittings you need to make the bench bleeding real easy.

or you could use the same hose and fittings, and not even have to pull it out of the truck. just use the brake pedal in place of the screwdriver.

As one who has tried to bleed the master cylinder without removing it, it is about impossible. Best and easiest way is take it off. Real easy to do and then you don't need any help to bleed it. I found out the brake pedal doesn't push in on the plunger far enough to get all the air out. Then you take three times as long to bleed each wheel cylinder.

I recommend removing the master cylinder and bleed it. Make sure you push in on the plunger as far as it will go on each stroke. Put it back on, fill with fluid and bleed each wheel again.

i didnt have any problems when i did my TA, maybe its a truck thing that it doesnt push it far enough?

I "bench bleed" my master cylinders on the truck and then bleed the brakes with a Mity Vac. The hand vac sure makes bleeding brakes much easier and you don't have to ask for help.

ok, well one of the local parts stores doesnt have the bleeder caps for the master cylinder, if it just needs to be bled no reason to buy a new one.. so how do i do it? can i just get a small thing of brake line that threads into the same hose, cut it short and run tubing up into the master cylinder?

I think the last time I had to bench bleed without the "proper" tools, I used some regular fuel line.. Each port is a different size, I think 3/8 for one and 5/16 for the other.. and it was a real tight fit into the hole.. it worked well.. just look for bubbles in the reservoir when you're bleeding it since you cant see thru the hose.
