Who's Idea Was It To Put Engine #s....
Just to start off, who's idea was it to put the engine number on the engine next to the transmission? It is a very big PITA to get to.
Alright, off that soap box. I have been under the assumption that my engine is a 307 based on what the previous owner told me when I bought it, I wasn't to concerned about what the engine was because it would be replaced anyway...well I got curious this weekend and checked the numbers out for myself. I could not find the identification numbers on the pass. side. Banged my head good a couple times trying to see down there to...but I did find a number on the drivers side that was interesting "3970010". I don't see this as the casting number for any 307s but I do see it as a number for the 69-79 truck 350 engine. Is there any other way to find out if it is a 350 besides the pass. side number? It's really hard for me to get down there and I don't want to have to strip down me engine to get back there. Thanks

look behind your alternator, there's a pad there where the head seats on the block with numbers on it to identify the engine itself, as long as the head deck hasn't been milled which means the numbers are long gone.

3970010 is the casting number for a large bearing 4" bore block. No way it can be a 307. I could be a 327 if someone put a 307 crank into it with 327 pistons.

That be cool if it was 350. You could go to the auto parts store and buy one of those cheap mirrors from by there counter and try that see if it helps out. Ya I hate the numbers in the back as well I am too big I don't event try to go back there to find out haha
