Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

Thanks guys for the kind words...Definite improvement...I got the whole truck minus the front clip finished....I have a little bit left on that driver side rear back quarter under the tail light..Man that was a bi**h by the way...No I went to harbor freight to pick up the uni spoter and nothing..I guess its a specialty item..even though its online..I ended up doing it old school with the a small drill bit...and the slide hammer..I was not worried about making extra holes because those quarters were fix before using the same method but I guess they screwed them up again. I wanted to ask what I should use as a primer to cover all that exposed metal. Keep in mind that I am on a real tight budget. I have used rustoleum in the past diluted and shot with a gun..Comes out looking good ever time, but this time I might want to spray real paint and not the usual satin black which I love. Not sure if they are compatible since its not an automotive primer. Thanks and god bless.

Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

That quarter panel turned out nice

The correct primer to use over bare steel is an epoxy primer. But typically that is applied immediately after blasting to eliminate any flash/surface rust. Then your body work is done over the epoxy. Then after the body work and filler is complete, you would want to start applying the primer surfacer. But of course that all costs a lot of $$$$$.

Yup. A can of rustoleum is better than bare steel...but if you do real auto paint you'll have to go back to bare metal again.

I got the tubular mounts at the Truck and Car Shop. They run around $130. You live close by them I believe. www.truckandcarshop.com

Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

Here are some pics of the driver side rear quarter panel repaired...This panel was a pain in the rear..The dent was very big, deep . I think it can out very good..You guys be the judge. All it needs now is a little of that soft filler that comes in a tube for the small scratches and pin holes. I believe all parts stores carry it.

Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

Hey fellow c10ers here are some pics of the body painted.. I used rustoleum primer for bare metal ..Its for super rusty metal which my truck was not but I am using it because its better at protecting the metal than the other rustoleum primers..I reduced it with acetone about 4 % and shot it with my $30 harbor freight lvlp gun.. I know that automotive paints are superior to rusto but I have had lots of compliments on my satin finishes. Also its never pealed or lost its sheen on me. Maybe when I have money I will paint her with real paint but for now rusto will do. Lol. I chose a hunter green satin color for the body and gloss white for the roof. Interior I am still lost on..Not sure but I like candys with flake alot...sorta like the ones you see on chopped old mercs. I might do something crazy like candy apple green on the dash and maybe on the roof instead of white...Any suggestions on what color to do the roof and interior to blend nice with that hunter satin green

Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

So I primed the interior dash, doors, roof etc.. I got lazy so I will upload some pics tomorrow.. My build seems quite as of late. So whats a good color for the interior and the roof? white? The body is going to be satin hunter green..I was thinking of painting the roof white or some crazy color like candy apple green ..Not sure on what color to do and what paint finish.. Note this is a budget build so I am spraying her with rustoleum paints reduced with acetone and shot with a gun.. Please any ideas of color combos are welcomed

Looks real good! how did you do the rear corners? mine is the exact same way and I'm by no means a body man. Any details on how you did it?

Re: 63 suburban newbie build first day

Thanks for the positive comments. Yeah my quarters were pretty far gone. The worst was the driver side under the tail light..I used a slide hammer that I picked up at pep boys. ( saw them also at auto zone) it was under 20 dollars.. Used that to pull out the dent as far as I could with out being to far out...I also used a body hammer( The one with the pointy end) to hammer down high spots. I wanted little bondo to prevent cracking.. I ended up using about 1/4 thickness of bondo on the worst spots which is not bad I think. By no means am I a body guy. This was my first dent pull. By the time I pulled my passenger quarter I felt real confident at tackling the other side. If I can do it you can to. I will gladly answer any questions.. As far as the paint... I reduced it with acetone 15% give or take . That helps it shoot out smooth and helps with runs. Also It dries to the touch in a little over an hour.. Good luck guys...and go burbans... we need more burban guys!

Sorry for the questions, but now you have me interested in doing mine....where did you get your paint for the primer, and did you spray it with the gun as well? My Burban is similar to that brown color already but needs a little work. Might give it a try with the HF gun, I'm just not in the know on the paints your using and where to get it.
