What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

I want to put a 454 or 502 in my truck which will be over 500hp. Will a th400 suffice? 4L80? 12 bolt posi rear? Any other suggestions? Can you list what has worked for you in the past, thanks for any input.

Turbo 400 will be plenty fine, just put some good parts in it.

12bolt should be fine also.

Th400 with 2400 stall and a stock posi truck 12 bolt. As soon as I get the coin together that will be replaced, I don't feel comfortable with that rearend and a 396 with a 177 B&M blower plus a 150 shot of N20. Hopefully we can baby it and not grenade it...

Re: What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

well I have a guy that has a 1969 Nova SS with a 427 with 500 HP with a 700R4 with a Gear vender. that can take up to 1000HP from top fuel. witch i doubt any truck in here will ever achieve or ever want to. That much horse power. If your trying to get gas mileage out of your ride and have a big block the 400 will do But you put a gear vender in you can run a regular 12 bolt truck rear end Gear it for the best How i like to say it Full on top end No limit.

So the guy next to you has a 600 HP engine HP is just a little bit of it. you gear it to run

Now the 4L80 is a good trans Needs a computer to make it work and most guys that have that set up have a fuel injected motor. Now they top out at 125 145 mile per hour and there pedal is on the floor bored

Now Run a 1988 1993 cable 700R4 with the corvette clutches the the metal sprag and run a gear vender. well it just makes that 4L80E cry

Cus with the 700R4 with the gear vender with a 4.10 mabey 3.77 gear you have a 8 speed 4 low 4 high first gear off the line with a 410 gear is a 5.90 final gear is like a 2.90 mabey 2.70

Never mess around with that other crap the Gear vender they put them under semi Racing trucks and Drag pull computations.Yes you spend 2500.00 for one but you fall in love with it

Thanks for the info so far. And, I forgot to mention that my main interest is doing a few burnouts and getting back off it, not top end speed.

Re: What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

stock 402 with a TH400 and a 3.07 12 bolt in the burb
425 caddy with a Th350 and 4.10 Eaton in the longhorn.
The TH350 has more clutch material sitting in the pan than I care to see... but I kinda expected it with the shift kit set on full neck snap shifts... and it is hooked to a big block after all.

Re: What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

I went and looked at a 67 today. The truck itself is in bad shape and has the motor and trans gone. But it had a 12 bolt posi in it. Lets assume that it has 200,000+ miles or so. What do u think its worth(just the 12 bolt rear)?

I just bought one last weekend for $220. But I don't know if that's good or bad for a well used posi rear.

Re: What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

I ran a 400 turbo behind the 461 inch Olds in my old longhorn, on a 3.42 gear.....was a hell of a ride 5250 on the tach would put her @ 123 mph....& still pullin like a train! I never did break that trans, & it was one that I homebuilt myself......bet she would have been cool as hell with a Vendors on the back tho My sb is backed with a ROD(gotta love that 3rd peddle)...she will cruise all day @ 3150 on the tach(105 mph) on that same 3.42 gear. Yup you gotta love that OD! Its all about gears, it dont matter how big or small.....if you have the proper gearing to keep the motor in its powerband, good things happen....as long as you dont run into "Barney", when you are playin freeway flya crazyL

Re: What trans and rear are u big blockers running?

Mild 454, 4L80E w/ Compushift controller and low stall torque converter, Dana 60 rear w/ 4.11 gears, 33in. tall tires.

Of course, I'm set up more for occasional off road excursions with reasonable highway travel and towing in mind. One thing I love about the Compushift controller is that it lets me set all my shift points, line pressure, shift speed, shift via push-button (or paddle shift), engage tow/haul mode, datalog, etc...
Still spins those 33" tires from a dead stop though and runs 2500 rpm at 75 mph.
