exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
I have headers and two chamber flows. Currently the exhaust stops at the mufflers with 3" turn downs.....sounds great. I was considering making a 90 bend and going 3" pipe out just in front of the rear tires..... now here is my question..... 1) will the sound change and if so better or worse and 2) will it look good. If you have exhaust before the rear please post pic..... if you have suggestion on how you think it will look let me know or if you think it will sound better with or without the extra pipe.....

That is how mine is and I don't like it. Whenever you drive by something solid the exhaust rattles right back at you. My chevelle turns down like you have it now and I prefer that.

The turnouts infront of the tires won't be as loud as what you have now.
With turndowns the sound is bouncing off the pavement back at the bottom of the truck.

That's how I see it. If you like how it sounds now, I wouldn't change it. I went from the same set up you have to then going over the axel and dumping behind the bumper of my camaro, and it was a night and day difference on the inside...kind of like I put stock mufflers on it even though out back it still sounded good.

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
so a 2 1/2 pipe out from the muffler for about 3 feet will tone it down some. That is what yours looks like to me Willie.... I just think too much pipe will tone it down too much.... I like the sound now just trying to tame it but not too much...... after all my 16 year old son will be driving it to school in 6 months...... so I want to keep that bad a$$ sound for him...LOL

Are your current turn downs pointed straight down? If so, you canm try angling them in some so the are pointing slightly to the center and down, and or try turning them so they are facing out both sides of the truck.
Suttle changes can make big changes in sound.

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
This is how I did mine. I am going to change the mufflers to something that sounds better when idling but I still plan on dumping in front of the tires.

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
Mine exit in front of the rear tires. I have resonators on mine. It is kinda loud and it does get peoples attention. I love driving under overpasses and blasting down the freeway @ 70 MPH next to a lane divider and having the exhaust blast off of it. But hey, I'm kinda weird anyways!

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
cool thanks all, I think i will take the turn downs off and angle it to the side and only go about 3 -4 feet long to kep it hidden. I really don't like the pipe to be seen from the side.... I will post pictures and sound video before and after......

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
I have 2-1/2 with flows I have had them both ways, turn down just behind the cab to loud for me in the cab and now as you see it in the pic not loud enough and has a tin sound. So I cut out the V-plate in both mufflers inside and sound great now. Plus motor runs better at high rpm's.

Re: exhaust advice needed, front of tires or?
dumping under the body is actually a bad idea. The exhaust gases are actually corrosive. If memory serves, flowmaster covers this on there web site. I know of one guy on here whom I will not menton his name, but his frame is damaged from the corrosive fumes, and under my longhorn, I can see where the gasses have taken it's toll on my underbody and frame.
As far as sound/noise. Turn downs under the truck, regardless of the angle will make it louder inside the truck, but quieter outside the truck. If the pipes exit out from under, then it is quieter inside, and louder outside. Exhaust being dumped on the tires with a rearward side exit is not good for the tires. It is marginal, but it does damage the rubber a little. The big thing that some people complain about with side exit, is it sounds 'funny'. You only hear 4 cylinders, firing in an odd order... almost sounds like 'something is missing'. Personally, I would recomend trying to get it out the back. If it is a cash issue as to why you don't want to run it out the back, maybe shop around or try to pull some strings with a guy at the muffler shop. If you simply can't/won't take the pipes out the back, then I would go for how mikey531 did his. Also, if you have coils in back, it's a real pain to route it and have it look good IMO. |

I always prefer the exhaust exit all the way back by the rear bumper, if you have room for that.
