MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
Well after lurking on here for many months and learning so much, I have decided it is finally time to start my own build thread. This is my 66 step side that I picked up about 7 months ago. I have never done body work before so this is a learning experience as I go along. I will say that most of what I have learned about this truck has come from this web site and everyone here is great and very informative. I have plans on finishing this truck in a military theme and have tons of ideas.
So with that being said, here is the day I picked up my $400 project…… [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
The truck was pretty rough when I got it. It already has a 350/350 from a camaro and front disc brakes. So after I got it home I started to tear it apart. I bought some patch panels and decided to try to make some at home from flat sheet metal and my little bench vice.

[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] As I went along with the build I started to learn more about making repairs and welding them. In the begining it was a mess... LOL [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
The lower back of the cab was rusted out form a small leak in the fuel tank. I cut most of it out and made my own patch pieces.. Kind of ghetto but they worked real good.
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Filled in my fuel door too.. [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
The front area of the hood was pretty bad too so I did what I could to fix that...
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Made these for the inner cab corners... [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Had to repair the lower front fenders also... [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Like I said this is the first time I have ever done body work like this so its not perfect but I am having fun doing it.... |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
For some reason the trucj had leaf springs in the rear when I got it. I think it was used as a work truck and had like a plumbers bed on it. I found some trailing arms and put thoses back on so it would be easier to put bags on it..
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I picked up a set of Dodge 20's for the truck.. [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
I got a set of air bags from Jason at AVS. I also picked up a C-notch from CCP. Here are the pictures of the C-notch going in.
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I had some small peices of steel so I decided to box the rear some. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by MOTOIMPAIRED; 09-26-2011 at 03:39 AM. |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
I used what I got in the kit and decided to modifiy it some to make it work how I wanted for the rear bags. This is also my first time ever doing air bags..
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I also made my own lowering blocks.. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
I got the whole truck stripped to bare metal. I used a stripping abrasive wheel on my grinder and I also used chemical stripper.
[IMG][/IMG] Now that most of the metal work is all done I am moving on to Bondo. I even made a putty board for mixing and it has a handle too.. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
I had some rust on the fire wall so I decided to make some repairs there too... Just a reminder, this truck was going to be a form or rat rod/shop truck so by no means will it be a show truck.
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I picked up a nice seat out of a Chrysler Imperial that has some cool aluminum sides. The seat will be recovered in canvass later. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
So with the air bags in I had to see how low it would sit aired out. Looks like it is going to sit nice and low....
[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] And here are a few pictures with primer. Right now I am in the process of spraying a 2K filler primer. I know the body work is not the best and I never planned for it to be but the body is looking pretty good to me.... [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: MOTOIMPAIRED'S Build Thread......
Thanks guys for the great words of encouragement, I sometimes tend to just jump in head first. I guess I saw my diamond in the ruff in her somewhere..
I will have more pictures soon. Just came in from the garage now for some dinner. I have to keep working, November is coming quick!
