Question on radiator catch can

Thinking of building myself a radiator catch can and was wondering does it need to have a cap or can it just have the entrance fitting from when it overflows out of radiator? Also does it need to seal so that it will pull coolant back into radiator or do they not do this? Thanks for helping

Re: Question on radiator catch can

As long as the tube goes all the way to the bottom of the catch can, it will draw up any liquid that's in the catch can. No seal is needed.

I use a Jack Daniels bottle.

Re: Question on radiator catch can

yes you need the proper type of radiator cap for a coolant recovery system to work properly and using glass container is a pretty foolish thing to use for an overflow catck can

I think driving a 43 year old truck with manual 4 wheel drum brakes, a gas tank sitting behind your back, and it's best safety device being lap belts while in modern vehicle traffic a pretty foolish thing to do too.... but I do that also.

Re: Question on radiator catch can

Is it necessary to have it function as a coolant recovery system? Or if I just have it as a occasional overflow and so that I can go on the track is that enough? I was thinking of welding some caps on a piece of exhaust pipe, coating it with some Kreem that I have laying around and powdercoating the outside of it and then putting an AN fitting in the top of it that goes to nipple on radiator neck.
LowGT that is a sweet looking LWB, if it had been me I would have done it with Maker's bottle instead I think :-P

Re: Question on radiator catch can

I had a buddy that had a toyota tercel in his back yard that he was using for parts. Asked if he was using the overflow tank from it. Got it for free, bent the mounting bracket from the toyota and used an existing hole on the fender to mount it to, ran the hose from the tank to the radiator and done.. 30 minutes.. Took longer to drive to his house to get it.

It's always nice to make something yourself. But I bought this one off of E-Slay for about $30 and no shipping.

Using up a good bottle of Kreem and then powder coating has to cost more than that.....no?

Had on of those and it didn't work, had to go with a model that would allow coolant to pass in both directions too and from the rad.

Without the valve on the bottom open all the time the tank quick pressurizes to the same pressure as the rad...which means nothing is going in.

Find one with a cap and over flow and return connections.

Ahhh. Thanks. It seems that the top valve is not a press fit...it swivels. So, I figured that there was clearance at the connection for de-pressurization so that the liquid that had overflowed from the rad into the canister would be picked up (when it cooled) at the bottom of the canister thru the tube and sent back to the rad.

If you had an EXACT ONE like this that didn't work, I would be really pleased to find out before I put it to the test.

I appreciate the info. And I'd REALLY APPRECIATE a follow-up so it doesn't get messy in there.

Re: Question on radiator catch can

You do need a catch can to run at a legitimate race track, but I would check with them about using glass?
Bach in the day there were several cars that had glass bottles, Ford even used plastic bags at one time, but I don't know if those meet race track standards.

Re: Question on radiator catch can

I converted my windscreen washer bottle to radiator overflow, as it was located in the right place and the windscreen washer pump does not work well anyways, so it was just sitting there taking up space. I plan to add a new washer bottle on the other side and get an after market pump so at least it is usable.

Re: Question on radiator catch can

On EBay I see that there is a stainless steel polished 18 oz can for 25 bucks. 10 dollars shipping sucks but that's pretty hard to beat plus its SS. I think I will just go that route.
