unfortunate incidents-sparks and idea!

I decided to take a day off from work and work on my truck. My wife gives me an option, go thift store shopping and the Halloween store for our boy.
Great, mother in law and us just into her Kia Sorrente and drive off.
As we start pulling into the parking lot we hear thump thump noises. We discover a flat, and the BAD GUY is a side cutter. I could not believe! The head of a side cutter, wire cutter or what ever you want to call them!
So, here I am day off and having to change a flat tire. I remove the tools from tray, hook up the jack, and go looking for the spare. I find it tucked under the rear, but could not release the tire. At this point I go for the owner's manual and find the info. The application calls for using the lug wrench and turning a big nut ( same size as lugs) to lower the tire. Wow! I think this set up would be COOL in my 64.
I take the system operates via pully's, turn the nut one way to lower and the other way to raise the wheel,lowering and raising a cable.
What do you think?

Way back in the early 90's I helped build a hybrid electric car; we loaded teh trunk with LPG bottles and bought one of the gizmos you mention to mount the spare underneath the car (Neon) where the gas tank used to be. I think it was from a F150 (?).

I used one off a Nissan truck, on my camping trailer, to get the spare up under the tongue box.

I had an '88 S-10 years ago, and it had a similar set-up. It had a receptacle to the left side of the license plate that you put the jack handle in. Turn it to the left, the wheel/tire assembly lowered down. There are tons of S-10s in the wrecking yards, so maybe you can find one cheap.

I had the sme set up on my 69 F250 with a camper on it. That was the only way to get the tire out.

I put the spare in my 61 with the clamping bar that came stock and what a pain to get back in. Stock spilt rim and radial tire was heavy but I could't seem to get enough leverage or stroke to get it together. I finally used a jack to get the thing compressed enough to get it together. I thought of the pully / winch system in the other truck while I was going through that.

My '04 Tahoe had it. Junk yards should be stacked waiste deep with them.

Square body S10 would be the best place to look. Finding one that still works and doesn't have the cable end rotted off may be a challenge.

yah I was going to say it sounds just like my old '99 silverado.

I had to get rid of the spare when I bagged the truck lol

a few years ago I built a 1978 lowrider c-10, and put a space saver from an astro van (dual bolt pattern rim) under the bed with a spare tire hoist out of a late 90's chrysler minivan. The setup is compact and really easy to install with a little fabrication the 'bolt head' was in the box floor and worked awesome. When I say lowrider, it was a static drop and a pop can rolled under the truck would not make it past the rocker panel.

my 97 dodge pu had it untill the cable broke, the tire bounced the truck, then went rolling down the road...luckly no one was around.

'85 and 2003 s10 are like that... mid 90's full size as well... I bought one from a junkyard... was pondering using it under old '65 c10 before I found the original parts.. may still use it, dunno yet.

As others mentioned, should be easy to find... a lot of the GM mini van's from 90's to 2000's used them as well.

i think you can also get them from places like LMC truck parts and JC Whitney. the one i had on my 2003 s10 broke some how and was looking for a place to get a new one. for some reason $30 sticks in my head for the price but dont quote me on that.
