ac recharge question on retrofit

Want to recharge my ac tomorrow but don't know if its been retrofitted for the r134. Is there anyway to visually look and tell

There should be an adapter screwed onto the fill port.

Not everyone will agree with this but I've been doing it for years. You can run 134 in an old system without changing anything. It won't get as cold as the R12 but it works fine. R134 is readily avail at the parts stores, you might shoot a can of oil-charge in it.

most retro i do i pull r-12 vacumm it for 45 mins put the 134 adapters on (r-12 look like the vavle ona tire with treads) and shoot a can ester oil charge in tot the system and charge it never had any issuses

Yeah, look for the adapters on the charge ports. No need to change oils or o-rings if it hasn't been retrofitted.

Mainly look for adapters like everyone else said, but really you can put 134a right into an R-12 system without evacuating it.

My system was so empty it didn't even make a sound when I opened the schrader valves, and had to hard-wire the compressor to make it start pushing freon until it started pulling on its own.

No matter what refrigerant, it will run constantly except when you're using the defrost or in some instances, depending on the compressor, when the fan is turned down.

As for how cold it is, it's not the greatest at low speeds, but when you're constantly moving above 30 it'll freeze your foot off.

I recommend putting a can of oil/stop-leak in it too, just in case.
