67 Spare Tire mounting

For as long as I've been driving my truck I've just had my spare tire laying in the bed. I'm trying to get it mounted into the cradle, but I can't seem to get it to fit. It's a 235/75 tire, I'm trying to lift the crade up to get the little loop hooked, but it seems like the tire is too fat. Do I have the tire in upside down? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Am I a complete idiot because I can't figure out how to get the spare tire in?

How about the bolt on the other end of the cradle? Usually, there's enough thread to screw it out some. In fact, your picture shows the bolt is screwed up pretty far. Just remember to tighten both nuts on it when you are finished.

Old thread; I know. The other end of the cradele has a bolt head, but does not appear to be threaded. I tried turning the bolt head, it will not budge. Is there a way to loosen the opposite end so that I may fit the spare tire? It seems like the 235 is just too fat.

Re: 67 Spare Tire mounting

yes...the tire is too fat. If you want to use a tire and rim that is wider than the original ones you will need to make longer pivot and attaching rods. I have also found them off of square bodies that were longer. Ive done it countless times.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking since the pivot side of the cradle does not appear to be adjustable. I guess I'll look for the narrowest tire I can fit on a standard rim.

What's a square body?? So, if I go to the junk next time...I know what to look out for.

Is your c10 a shortbed or long? I saw a similar spare tire holder, but didn't bother taking it out at the junkyard because of it not fitting under my shortbed. Also, my 67 does not have a leaf (I don't know if that matters).
