Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread
I'm thinking an aluminum insert in the tail gate that fits over a Delrin sleeved pivot pin on the stock bed side bracket base with the stock outer portion removed. Shim the side brackets as needed to remove side to side slop once the tail gate is installed.

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread
Hey Cheby,
Going back to your dilemma with the tube steel. We have to do this all of the time at work. Do you have a metal fab table? We call it back bowing the piece to help keep it the steel from curling up like a banana. You might still be able to back bow it by clamping it down to the table and warm it up slowly. I would most definitely clamp or weld it down to a table before welding the rest of it up. Have you ever used a product called Heat sink? Most of the welding shops have a form of this and it will help keep the piece cooler while working with it. Hope all goes well!

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread
cheby,
Another idea is to just stitch weld it with a one inch weld or so every two to three inches then spot face weld between those on the front side. Grind all those welds smooth and use metal filler between the stitch welds and work it for a fully smooth look. That will keep the heat down and still be strong. Just an idea. |

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread
thanks i am open for any ideas..just left my friends fabrication shop , took over both of the ones that have built and that have warped on me and all of the new metal, we are going to work on it this weekend at his shop on a real heavy duty welding table where we can really clamp it down and he might even tig weld it to try to hold down on heat a little.......my fingers are crossed we will see what happens !!
