Windshield washer not pumping water..

First of all, ive been doing some searching, let me run this by to see if ive got it plumbed right-

Big hose goes to the water source (mlik jug with water for testing purposes).

The 2 small hoses go to the windshield for the squirters

Hooked it up and nothing, the wipers wipe but thats all, what to check next? Hotwire the motor to make sure its not a bad connection switch?

Locdoc...where are you?

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I just got done putting a brand new wiper motor and washer pump in a 69 c10 and it doesn't have enough power to pull and push the water. The only way I've ever got them to work is to mount a late model pump in line.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Thats what im discovering, the wipers/motor makes noise, maybe I should try priming it? I dont really NEED it, but it'd be cool to have it to work..

Anyone else

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Is the pump solenoid operating? When you push the washer-wiper button, you should be able to hear a click and thud noise when the solenoid releases the pump plunger.
If it does that & still doesn't pump, check the 4 lobe plastic cam on the wiper motor. It may have come loose from the drive shaft.
You should get 10-12 pump strokes before the pump returns to the park position.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I dont think its even sucking it thru the hose TO the pump, hose was dry, I tried priming it about 10-15 times, dry as a bone.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Starting from 'off' position, I push the button it it slides to the right and activates the wipers

Yeah, I hear some kind of click, not real sure about the thud or not..

"If it does that & still doesn't pump, check the 4 lobe plastic cam on the wiper motor. It may have come loose from the drive shaft"

-Do I need to remove the pump for that???? Dont quite understand thanks

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

It should self-prime if all is well. There are rubber o-rings inside the pump that seal the piston in its bore, as well as rubber check valves. They can dry out, rot, etc. LMC has a rebuild kit for about $10.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I keep reading that even the stock pump blows (no good lol).

Is it worth rebuilding or should I just opt for a newer style junkyard setup

Smile Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I've never had those work successfully myself. I think I've had to fix or replace all of the ones I've ever had. I love the originality stuff...but I always end up going with a hidden external 12v pump.
The worse part is not even the pump issue so much (which definitely is not that great), but the access is a disaster, particularly if the truck has a/c. That pump is so nested up under the dash it is next to impossible to work on and find the right terminals, fasteners, assembly screws/bolts, etc...yikes.
I would recommend getting a 12V pump and mounting/hiding it up under the dash in place of trying to repair the original one.
The wiring for a new pump is sort of tricky tho'. You have to run a positive directly to the new pump and the negative up to the existing switch.
The old pump uses a system that contacts to 'ground' to operate so find out which of the (3) terminals on the switch goes to 'ground' when it is depressed. This is the terminal you want to connect your (new) pump negative wire/connector to.
Good luck

The drive cam is on the bottom of the wiper motor between the pump & the motor. The pump is held to the motor by 2 or 3 screws. The cam is attached to the opposite end of the crank shaft that works the wipers.

When the pump isn't in use, the pump piston is held in a 'cocked' position. The solenoid release it & the cam on the wiper motor raises it back up. A little mechanism counts the strokes and after 10-12 piston strokes it cocks it back in the cocked position on the last stroke. If the cam isn't turning, it won't cock, and you won't hear a thud when the pump starts.

There is some grease on the moving parts too, and its possible that its gummed up and not releasing.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Oldgold, are you happy with your factory pump (sounds like you've monkeyed with one before quite a lot).

Others-whats a good pump to get from junkyard?

When I had it hooked up with good wiper blades it was OK.
I've not had it hooked up since it started leaking a few years ago. I plan on rebuilding it before summer & actually using new parts this time.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I should add, my 75 Malibu uses the same basic set-up, same pump I believe.
I have no intention of making the factory set-up work on that car, I'll go with something else.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Any late model gm truck will have one that snaps into the side of the washer tank. They just pop out, and make sure to get the wire pigtail. Can't remember which ones have the smaller pipe that goes into the tank (some are larger). Then just mount inline and wire to constant 12v with key on and the other to the brown wire on wiper motor that activated original pump.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I've had nothing but troubles with rebuilding the pumps and the repop pumps. Ended up getting a universal kit from NAPA part number WIP 60300. Mounted it near the washer reservoir and ran the wires from the original pump to the new. Works like a charm.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Get a pump off of a late 80's to early 90's Chevy van. They use the same washer bottle as these trucks and have an external pump that mounts to a small bracket. They work great.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

I am actually working on mine today. I got a Trico super pump and I am going to install it today. I have rebuilt these factory washer pumps before and they are not worth the time. So $16 at Oreillys auto parts for the pump is a good deal. Once I figure out the wiring on my 69 to get the pump to work, I should be all set. I'll post when I'm done what I did for the wiring.

Re: Windshield washer not pumping water..

Ok, all done. Don't touch the wires at the switch, don't need to. Unplug the 2wire harness set the washer pump, unpinned the terminals from the plug. There is a yellow wire and a blue wire. Mount your pump where you need it. I mounted mine on the fender well by the reservoir. Now get some wiring and wire up everything. My Trico pump came with black and white wiring so I ran the same colors back inside the cab to the original 2 wire harness. I put the white to yellow and the black to the blue wire. Turn on the power, tested, everything works the way it is suppose to. DONE.
