enines woes

Okay, I got my engine all wired up and cranked it over but it just backfires out the exhaust, I cant seem to get it timed? any thoughts 350 engine

Check your distributor position. Did you have it out at all?

The first thing I would do is to check that all plug wires are connected correctly according to the firing order (1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2). If that checks, next bring #1 cylinder up on TDC and check for correct distributor installation (rotor pointing toward #1 spark plug wire contact in the cap).
