The overwhelming majority of flux core wires are straight polarity (meaning the wire is hooked up to the negative side) and the solid wires, which use a shielding gas, are reversed polarity (wire is connected to the positive side). If you have some spare time try a test with different polarity settings. Although core wire is not a first choice for body work, it should look better than that. But by far your gas weld is far better.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

i have the ground wired to the negative. i swapped them around and it crackled more. i know one or the other will put more heat into your work or the wire. i would think i'd want more heat in my work, but i'm not that educated in welding to make that call yet. yeah, my welds could look better but i just can't deal with creating more holes.
when i did my caddy taillights on my 01 silverado, i used a friends elec. miller with flux core. the weld quality was about the same but i didn't burn holes as much (of course the sheet metal wasn't 40 yrs old)

Your original post said you wanted a "smooth flowing truck". A supercharger will make it a bit twitchy, forced induction really peps up the motor.
your right, my cab and bed need ALOT of TLC. i'll be slicing and dicing the bed up. stay tuned for pics of the bed when i get to that point. lol i'm loving every minute though. if i'm not playing with my truck, then i would just be inside watching tv.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

a little progress. i went ahead and hung the door to get the lower outer panel welded in. i got the front support welded in today. just a little grinding left to it. i only worked on it about an hour today. working 6 days 55 hr work weeks will take it out of you. BUT, the extra project money is nice.
the first one is always the doozy. i will be going about the other side differently. i didn't realize at first, but the PO at some point replaced the lower panels. they just didn't replace the rusted supports or floor. so, i'll be going from underneath and getting all the rust out. that side should go alot quicker, and i'm glad i don't have to worry so much about alignment.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

rear passenger cab support is in tonight. i think i'm going to use my kbs chassis coating for underneath & the inside of the floor. i'll just order another kbs kit once i get closer to the frame work. hmmm....i'll see once i do a little more research.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Looks like your getting the hang of the solid wire, this is great practice for you.
Just to answer your question DC electrode negative generates most of the heat on the work side and DC electrode positive generates most of the heat on the electrode side. This is why a lot of those small inexpensive machines use core wire, because the manufacturer wants as much penetration as possible given the limited duty cycle of the machine. Another trick for doing body work is "triggering" which is basically a series of tackwelds in a row. Keeps the heat down and reduces warping
Looking good so far.

thanks for the info. yeah, i've been doing what you call "triggering". patience is what i've had to learn. some times i would run a short bead and think, "i'll clean that up with grinding". i wasn't too worried about warping since i was around all the angles. then once i got to the grinding, i'd get pissed at myself for doing that. lol time consuming grinding unnecessary welds. so, patience pays off with tacking. better penetration, cleaner, and grinding is a breeze.

That's pretty cool. I am going to use one of my old rims as a hose reel...just have to get the rest of the parts I want to attach it to the house....

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Nice project name.

The coat rack is pretty cool. I need to make one of those for the shop.

I have the same blue seat in my 69 4x4. Fits great and is pretty comfortable.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

that's funny stuff. she asked me where i was going to put it? i said, "i'm going to take down the one in the hallway and hang it there." lol she said, "that's not going to happen." she did mention we could put it in the computer room, she may do a car theme in that room.

midniteotto - i showed her your comment. she laughed. she said you should put that saying on a magnet. "If you get the look, then you know it goes in the garage."

68 TT - yeah, i love that seat. the arm rest is great. i'm going with black interior, so i'll have to find someone that can recover it. dieing it isn't an option, it's nasty.

Looks like you got the supports in good deal! I just finished mine a few weeks ago and it was a pita...

Usually when I get the "look" I end up in the garage.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

i got the rest of the grinding and fuel line holes filled in. i picked up a few bags of fine white sand and my blaster still wasn't cutting anything. i got fed up with it and just got after it with a die grinder, wire brush, chisels, etc. it was nice getting to roll it outside and wash it down. i applied my kbs coating. the aqua-klen and rust blast works pretty good. i was able to put a nice thick coat and 2 coats in the common rust areas, i still have a little over half of my kbs stuff. it may be enough to do the frame. if anything, i'll just need to buy a pint of rust seal. time will tell how well of a job i did.
