I took my '72 GMC in 2-days ago for a full restoration and it will take about a year to do. My body man is going to start the bed first. I'll take some pics in about 2-weeks. Thank you for everyones help.

WOW! That will be fun to watch...but personally...I couldn't keep my hands out of the project so they would end up charging me double! Like the saying goes $50/hr...$75 if you watch and $100 if you help! I think they saw me coming and posted it!

Do they actually charge by the hour on restorations? If so, do they bill you like a lawyer would, and you just have to take them for their word?
I can imagine a year's worth of work would be astronomical, but you know it would be done right.

I have a 72' Cheyenne Super 'BlackIce' and Parduescustoms has been working on it off and on since last December. I help when I can but he charges by the hour. I pay him once a week. It isn't that bad but it does take a lot of cash for an undertaking of this magnatude.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly do you mean by "full restoration"?

Do you plan on having them perform a "frame off" restoration or are you just speaking of a paint job?

I'm new to this board, so this will be my first post. Please don't banish me from the land, but I thought half the fun of owning a classic truck (even a daily driver like my 72 cheyenne super) was doing the work yourself, kind of a sense of accomplishment. But congratulations if its your dream to own a professionally restored truck. Please don't chastise me, just my 2 cents.

To answer your question, you are old fashioned, but then again, most of us are. Otherwise we wouldn't love these old trucks!

hey, I've got a '72 sierra grande. I have to go the cheap route though, so by the end I'll have saved money restoring it, I just hope it still runs when I'm through with it though. *sigh* one day I'll figure out what I'm doing....

jorgensensc: I think that is a fair question and that's what makes the board so great. There is many ways to approach a resto and dropping it off at someones shop is one way. Some folks are very busy and can make more money at work than building there truck and others just don't want to do it.

I have a customer dropping off a car next friday for a frame on restoration and he is more than happy to pay by the hour. I'm glad there are car junkies that don't want to do the work it keeps me in business!

Don't get me wrong, I would love for my son and I to build this truck from the ground up but I just don't have the time or knowledge. I would rather pay Tony to do it right and do it one time than for me to do it and then have to pay him to redo what I screw up on. I am very involved with what he is doing, I have purchased all of the parts and I make all the decisions as to just how I want the truck done.

Thank you everyone for your input and all of your help in the past. My brother and I are building the motor once he takes it out.I'm having my ground up restoration done because I don't know how to paint, etc, and I'm getting a very good deal from the gentleman which was introduced to me by another friend of mine. He gave me a flat rate and I've seen some of his restorations on our trucks and he is a perfectionist and does great work and has a waiting list of 15 cars to be restored after mine. Other people wanted to give me an hourly rate ,but it leaves a ? mark on the restoration price and some people gave me a price on the restoration then increased their price after agreeing to the origional restoration price. My body man said it probably won't take a year but he said he wanted to do a good job on it. I'll keep you all updated on the progress of my truck. Thanks again to everyone for all of your help and a big Thanks to Bill at Bill Athey's classic truck parts in Virginia.
