Fair price for dual exhaust?

I'm looking to get a true dual, H-pipe, 2.5" system with 45-degree turndowns right behind the rear wheels. I already have the mufflers and ball flanges, I only need tubing and welding. I called on a couple shops locally and they quoted me $400+ each. I also talked to a guy in Western Mass who'd do it for $300 over the phone, and a friend from work can tow it up there for me.

I feel like it should be pretty simple and easy labor since there's no old exhaust to take out and there's no rust on the truck...

Are those prices fair? Just want to be sure all my bases are covered

Thanks!

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Ouch! I had mine done for $225. I took a $75 X-pipe kit from Advance Auto. The shop provided all piping, welding and two Magnaflow mufflers. I drove my truck there with only headers.

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Wow, wish I could get quoted those kind of prices. I asked a local shop and they said from the manifold back (using my current mufflers) minimum $550... has anybody ordered LMC Truck's dual exhaust kits? I'm curious as to how they fit and how long they last.. Maybe it would be worth it to you to check out some online exhaust dealers. Not sure about shipping...

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

I payed 450$ 2 1/2" pipes full system to the rear, 2 magnaflow cats, mufflers and all mounting hardwear included. If I could I would have left the cats out it, would have saved me 200$

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Yea I canīt complain, the shop I went to had never done one before so they were kind of excited about it.
The system on the truck was originaly the standard 2 to 1 (305 engine), but diesel pickups have dual system from factory, so I took the measurments from that and made a feve modifications, recalculated the lenghts of the down pipes from the manifolds etc. They gave me a good deal and I gave them the drawing of the system, I know that they have sold at least 3 of them since then so I guess it was a good deal for them as well.

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Man I still wish I lived in Austin...

Yea for just tubing and welding, my quoted prices sound way too expensive...I was expecting to pay $200 or so max. Guess I'll keep shopping around

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Shopping may help, but a lot has to do with labor rates. For your area that may be the "going" rate.

I know shop rates are a lot lower in SC than they were in ME.

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

I pulled the old system off from the manifolds back. I sold the cat for $50. I used my gift cards from O'Reilys to get 2 Thrush Welded. It cost me $220 for 2 1/4 duals all the way out the back. A an H pipe would of cost me $35, but I dedided not to get it. I love the system that had a net cost ou of my pocket of $170

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

at home $200 is pretty standard for manifold back dual's or custom single.
I paid $200 for ex on first S10, they made a custom Y pipe , best quiet muffler they sold and turn'd out behind the rear wheel and 3 week's later when I installe'd my collum shifter they rework'd the Y pipe to clear the shift linkage at no extra charge.

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

I'd pay $400 in a heartbeat for a good dual exhaust system for my truck. You HAVE to ask around before having anybody do your exhaust.. I don't care what the shop tells you or how good the place "looks"... I've found few shops that do truly excellent work. Until I found "the" shop, I always asked guys at the auto-parts store or junkyard, etc "who does the best exhaust work around here?"

When I bought my '78 454 C15, it had a brand new dual exhaust system on it -- it was done literally a couple weeks before I bought it. The pipes weren't straight or level and in less than a month, I saw soot from every single joint. Needless to say I took it to "my" favorite shop & had them replace the garbage with a new system (flowmasters, no cats or H-pipe) ...the guy bent the pipe there and routed it perfectly behind the rear wheels as the factory routed it. I put about 80K on that exhaust & even though the truck is currently dead, the exhaust is still near perfect.

This was done in Birmingham, AL at a cost of $250 somewhere around '97 to give you some idea. Repeat: you need to ask around before you drop cash on exhaust.

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

I just paid 350 to have my 98 done on Tuesday. The cats had been removed very poorly by the PO and he fixed all that up, true duals with turbo mufflers and 3" tips. He also replaced the donut gaskets while he was there and I supplied the gaskets. That gave him some trouble though I think. He used 2.25 piping throughout.....

This is the go to guy in my area, he does great work. Even paints the insides of the tips and all joints and welds when he's done. Only place around that i've seen that......

Re: Fair price for dual exhaust?

Although it was a Christmas present, I have a copy of the receipt for my exhaust setup. 2.5" pip from the manifold through Magnaflows (it didn't say what type nor does my dad remember). All of it total (parts + labor) was $400 exactly.

I didn't have any cats put on.
