327 has no bolt hole!

My truck is a 66 c20 with a 327 and 4 speed. I was going to throw a new harmonic dampener on and lo there are no threads with which to use my installer tool. Is there some special tool to reinstall the balancer other than the obvious BFH? I really dont want to beat the hell out of my engine for fear of creating unnecessary work for myself.

Some cranks did not have threaded holes. Don't beat the thing. You can mess up the mains. I heated my balancer in the oven on low temp and tapped it on. There are a lot of opinions on this topic. I suppose the best way is to drop the crank and have it pressed on.

Heat up the balancer as Sillyoldman mentioned, This can be done either in an oven, or in a pot of boiling water. In the over, be very careful you don't get it too hot so as to comprimise the rubber. At the same time, if you can,cool the crank snout. An ice pack should work. Then when you do go to install the balancer, don't mess around, get it driven on before the temps equalize. I would use a soft mallet or at least a block of wood between the balancer and hammer.

Just did that on my 230 and it worked like a charm. I pulled the rad and sat on top of the valve cover to get a comfortable spot to hold a piece of wood on the HB and tap it on.

The installers work wonders when you have a bolt on type but the early ones like yours just use friction.

The heat/ cold trick works well.

Most people wont agree with this , but the according to everything I have read the early 265 283 balancers were installed with a lead hammer at the factory ,it leaves no marks and works fine .. I have had one I made in my tool box going on 20 years ,I use it for the ones with no bolt holes in the crank ... I have an installer for the rest...

BFH and a thick block of wood, the heating/cooling trick helps too...

I might ad after loosing one off an engine ,I do drill and tap all of them unless it is for a restoration, it only takes a few minutes in the mill .....

This is what I was going to suggest. I usually used a BFH and a block of wood in the past. This past summer, I lost one coming back from Taos. Drilled and tapped it after that. Highly recommended...

Thank you everyone for your help! Im gonna give the hot and cold trick a shot this weekend. I do wonder, though, how they were put on at the factory. If i had taken it to the chevy dealer in 1966 how would they have installed it?
