For this year I'm just putting the 292/SM420 back in. I'll change some gaskets on it and paint it up to make it pretty but that's it. Next winter's project is the LS. I'll do a decent cam and convertor next year until I get bored with it, I've got a few nitrous parts sitting in the garage so we'll see...

I guess you can't get everything done this year. That would definately make the rest of us look bad.... As for the LS I was blown away with the stock power and now I want more!!!!

You should do a cam and convertor... especially now that you've got the ride sorted out, lots of winter left to go.

Lots of winter and no funds for that. I still got to get my PB stuff and findd a posi rear end for the beast. A lot of other small stuff to that prob won't get done too.

Not a lot of progress, feels like a lot of time was wasted. I had built a frame for the cab to sit on and roll around the garage on. Well, today I lowered the cab onto it and soon wished it was about six inches longer. The cab started tilting backwards from the weight bias. Up it went on the hoist again and I began draining the gas tank. 50+ litres later and a trip to Canadian Tire for another gas can I finally got it drained. I didn't do anything else while it was draining as the fumes were pretty strong and I didn't want to risk a spark. Cab sits on the dolly fine now.
Got the cab moved and lifted the box off the frame. I'll build a dolly for the box tomorrow out of wood to free up the hoist. The wife is after me for a service on her car LOL. Put the frame up on some pipe stands. I only had two of my own so yesterday checked Kijiji and two hours later I had two more. I started pulling the rear suspension off, ended up cutting one coil spring and had a big fight with one bolt at the front of a trailing arm. It eventually lost. |

Got a little more done today. Got the two rear crossmembers out and have removed the dropmember and made most of the cuts to install the rack notches.
When I pulled the shock crossmember I found a nice surprise waiting for me. Did some quick measurements and it looks like it will present a little issue when I install the step notches. Oh well, should have them fit up tomorrow and we'll see how it looks. |

Sorry if you answered this question someplace else, but the purpose of the large yellow screen?
I am guessing it is a spark/debris shield? I totally dig your shop, I would be in danger of losing my marriage if I had a shop like that right now. After I retire, it is going to be pretty much a given, but that is still a few years off yet.

Not too much to report, time in the shop has been limited as last Wednesday my wife gave birth to our son.
I got my tire racks installed and put up some bolt bins. When I had the rack notches tacked in I mocked up the dropmember and rack, I didn't like the fit, seemed like the tie rods would bind on the notch at full drop. So, I cut the tacks and sunk the notches deeper into the frame, almost making them flush to the bottom of the frame. Just have to finish up the welding. I mocked up the step notches and ran a straight edge from the bottom of the frame to see how much room is in the notch. Looks like I'll be lowering them half an inch as I need 16.75" and have 17.25" right now. I'm ordering trailing arms and crossmember from Nate in the morning, he says he can have them shipped at the end of March so I should be able to drive to the border Easter weekend and pick them up. |

Keep chewing away at it... eventually it will be done, RIGHT?!?
Got the rack notches burned in. Step notches are welded enough that I could cut out the frame. Still lots of welding left with the notches and reinforcing where I cut out rust in the frame. I ordered my trailing arms, crossmember, lower shock bar and panhard bar. Nate says they'll ship by the end of the month so I can have it for Easter weekend. |

Not a lot done this weekend but every little bit counts. The rear step notches are completely welded out. Just have to do some trimming of the overhang. Patched up the frame where I cut out the rusted section. Finally wired up my oven outlet so I can start powdercoating. Did a bake out on a couple pieces that I sandblasted a while ago. Not sure if I'll get time tomorrow to powdercoat them or not before I head back to work.

Got a bit more done this long weekend. Made a run to the border and picked up a couple boxes, ordered trailing arms, crossmember, shock bar, panhard and some hood hinges.
Put the dropmember back in, installed the upper and lower control arms, installed the new shock mounts. Removed the old trailing arm crossmember and installed the new one and arms. The rearend is out of an '81 so I removed the shock and leaf mounts and tossed it in. It's too wide so I'm not sure what I'm going to do... The original plan was to reinstall the 292 and get the truck on the road this summer but I got convinced to not waste my time and just start on the LS install even if it delays getting on the road this year. Need to see if Nate will do a swap for my inline mounts. A buddy is starting on my truck box this week, it's definitely the roughest part of the truck. A little work on the cab after that and she'll be good to go. |

Thanks for the kind words guys.
After discussions with Matt, I think I'm going to switch out the 20X10's with 295/45's out back for 22X9's with 265/40's. The tire height is the same so no issues with the notch. With equal backspacing I gain an inch of clearance and the tire is 1 inch narrower which gains me .5 inch. So in total I gain 1.5" clearance per side which should be enough. |
