Rear Disc Brakes
Whos running them?
What did you use? I read that you can use 80-85 Caddy Seville rear calipers. What I havent seen it what rotors and who makes/sells just the bracket. I found CCP has a kit but its around $600 and it didn't say what rotors they use or if you had to redrill the bolt pattern. What about newer trucks that have disc brakes? Are they 5 lug or only the 6 lug Tahoe/Burb's have rear discs? |

I am making my own from a set of 4X4 front backing plates. I got the idea from another member. He did it on his truck and it worked out. He used the backing plates with regular front calipers from a 71-87, and new Cherokee rotors. He said there was only a little machine work involved.
I looked at the kits too, but decided it was too much. |

Hey give my friend a call at Blackbird's Custom Trucks ..
Rear disc brakes is pretty much what he does.. I have his kit on my blazer and my '72 3/4ton

*** We don't sell the brackets. The kits run 325.00 for non e-brake and 470.00 for e-brake. The smallest we sell the kit at is brackets and rotors which runs 290.00. All these prices do not include shipping. Thanks *** I asked for more details like what calipers and what rotors they use to put the kits together. I am also emailing back and forth with an eBay seller. This is what I have so far. ***Our "10+12 Bolt" brackets will fit the 5-lug 70's pickups for sure. Our "55-57Chevy" brackets also fit the pickups, but they are $10 higher since they carry a couple extra parts. You can use 1978 Cad rear rotors for the 5 on 5 lug circle. disc conversion
Anyone doing a conversion on a 4X4 or 6 lug rear, check the following link:

Scroll down on the first page and look for A-tron disc brake conversion story. Be carefull with the ebay ones. They are for the axles with the square flange. These trucks have a rectangle flange. Make sure they are the right brackets for your axle. Or you will have to do some redrilling.

Just a shout back about Blackbird's kits, He has been working with our year trucks for almost 20 years. He stands behind his products and has never done anyone wrong..He will work with you to fabricate a kit that sits perfect on your axle. All you would have to do is give him measurements..
Be carefull with ebay people. Remember if it doesn't fit when you get it.. Will the people refund you your money back?? You could take the chance and buy just brackets but blackbirds has gotten many a phone call from people who have bought brackets from someone else and had problems with getting them to work right. That is why he doesn't just sell the brackets seperate.. Each brake kit has a different rotor that will work with it. He has also found out that you can get the same rotor application from 2 seperate companies and they are not equal in thickness.. So just a heads ups to anyone who wants to keep brake kits in mind for the future Blackbird's Custom Trucks Thanks

jman: I'll have to check the flange issue with the guy.
drink2mny: I wanted to know what rotors and what calipers. my main concern is using OE GM parts that dont need machining. The next issue is obviously price. I am waiting for more details back. |

And you trust some guy off ebay to make a better bracket? You must be kidding... I would rather make my own, that way I know everything fits like it's supposed to. No worries.

I wouldn't trust him either. THe point is brakes shoud be done by an expert or buy a kit from a reputable company.

I'm using factory disc brake backing plates, just moving them to the back. Where, by the way they will have less stress than when they were on the front.
