Re: My 58 Fleetside

I have to new rear in and the brakes installed but have a problem. On the left side the brake pads don't compress at the top fully and are not in contact with the top pin. It looks like everything is right with the install and the emergency cable is not tight, so what gives any ideas? Also I have the engine and trans cleaned up and just need to bolt them together and install, hoping to have pictures up later in the week.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

I have the engine ready to go into the truck when I found out the that mounted are quite a bit different... First I made a template out of paper, then cut it out of metal. Then welded the plate to square tube.

I have the engine and trans in place. Measured the length for cutting the tube.

Also I made a little bead blast cabinet. Tried it out today and it still needs a little tweaking.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

HELP! I'm trying to get my wiring harness back together, I got my truck in pieces and am trying to figure out the brake light circuit. I have 2 different wiring diagrams and neither one make sense to me. The first says that power comes from the light switch on a orange wire and then goes straight to the taillights. The second says that power comes from from the turn signal on a white wire (by means of magic) and goes straight to the taillights. Now the way I understand brake lights in relation to rear turn lamps is that they have to run a signal through the turn signal switch. So I want to believe that power comes from the light switch on the orange wire and then go to the turn switch through the white wire but the diagram doesn't make that seem the case.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

I didn't see how it ties into the turn signal switch. It doesn't show the two wires for the stop light switch itself. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with this, thanks for trying to help the helpless

Re: My 58 Fleetside

Here is a copy of a 1959 passenger auto wiring diagram. I have found it helpful when trying to figure how how to wire in accessories that are not shown in the truck diagram. GM was pretty consistent in the wiring setup and colors, etc. between the cars and trucks. Hope it helps.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

Green, the orange wire connects to the headlight switch to a post labeled "S". This post has battery voltage on it all of the time. The orange wire goes to one side of the brake light switch. The white wire from the other side of the brake light switch connects to the white wire that goes into the turn signal switch. The power to the brake lights goes through the TS switch.

The wire to the tail lights connects to the "T" terminal and the front parking lights connect to the "PK" terminal. If you want your front parking lights to stay on with the headlights you can connect them to the taillight terminal. Also, the "D" terminal is for the dome light. When wired as original the dome light has battery boltage on it all of the time. the "GRD" terminal provides the ground for the dome light when turned on. The "PL" terminals are for the dash (panel) lights which are controlled by the reostat on the front of the switch. The "H" is for headlights, and "BA" is the battery connection.

Hope this helps.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

Russell, great photo and writeup. If you wire the park light to the T terminal I assume they will still function as turn signals too?

Yes, with factory turn signals the front parking lights use dual filament bulbs like the tail lights. The wire that you put on the "T" terminal lights the lower power filament only. The turn signals aren't affected.

Re: My 58 Fleetside

I have a question that I hope one of you can help me with. I'm working on the passanger door and getting the seals put in, the problem I'm having is the vent window doesn't seem to have a top pivot. Is there a part I am missing or a step. Thanks

green '
there should be a pivot pin (rivet) that holds the vent in place at the top - -most classic truck part places should carry them ( they are small) -you might be able to get away with useing a aluminum rivet but i have found that if the original rivets are available -go that route -it might be a bit awkward to hammer it in - take it time and a couple of goods whacks should do it . --- good luck
