350 / 700r4 Combo - Firewall mod needed?

Hello All,

So with the help of you all Im putting together my drivetrain. My 3.42 rear is ready. 700r4 sitting on my floor. Still working on my small block.

Im probably going to go with a No Limit front IFS.

For those of you that have dropped in a 350SB with a 700r4 or TH350 trans, did you have to modify the firewall for clearance? If so how much? What IFS if any did you use?

I just want a heads up of what im in for.

Pictures??

Thanks in advance

I didn't get what year truck you are working on so the first two pictures are from a '56 chevy with a 350/700r4 and no work had to be done to the fire wall, the last two are from a '52 suburban with a 350/700r4 and we had to open the top up a little to clear the top of the trans.... hope this helps..

If your working on a 55-59 you shouldn't have to modify the firewall or floor to get a small block and 700r4 mounted. If you want to set the engine bake as far as posable use a small distributor instead of the HEI.

I'm using a 5.3 Vortec and 4L60E in my '57.

BTW I used No Limit Wide Ride Front suspension and their Fat Bar Rear suspension.

he has a 52 chevy 3100 in his signature

no fire wall mod required and if you use an ifs you can center the motor too
fatman has imo the best ifs for these trucks.

Hi Oger,
Gee did I miss something in C6_ROB's Signature ? All I see is Corvettes !

So since he didn't mention what he was working on I put in my 2 cents assuming he might have a TF.

So I just went back and dug through his profile to find his sig, sure enough there it was. Sure would have saved the confusion if he mentioned what he was working on or showed below his pic.

You should not have to touch your firewall. This is 1954 truck with a small block, 700r4 and Nova clip and the firewall was not touched.

You don't if you set the engine as Kabwe did. I've seen several though that the guys wanted to mount the engine higher in the engine compartment and ran into trouble at the firewall and floorboards.

At one time I had a 350 with a turbo 400 behind it in the 48 with no floorboard or firewall modifications.

Usually it works better to mount the trans first and then level the engine and put in the front mounts. That way you can get the floorboard clearance you want and get the output shaft of the trans where you want it and not fight the firewall or floorboard.

C6_rob, in 1968, I bought a '54 and it had a '49 Cadillac engine and a 4 speed hydromatic. In 1975, I changed all that out for a 327/TH400. It does not have a modified firewall nor does it have a hump in the floor. Also used the original radiator. Good luck with your build. Clay

My 53 has a 4L60E and my 55 1st has a Tremac and I did not remove any firewall or floor sheet metal to install this combo, and I still have room to remove the valve covers
