Question Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

So I'm gonna be painting my '79 this summer, and I'm thinking about using Duplicolor Candy Apple Green, with candy black and silver...anybody used Duplicolor candy paint before? Is it any good? If anybody's got pictures of candy painted trucks, especially of the candy green, feel free to throw em up here, it'd really help me out!!

Here's a quick draft rendering of the truck...and the colors I want to use...what do yall think?

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

I know of a couple of guys here that have use House of Kolor paint with very good results, don't know about Duplicolor. Candy paints can be real tricky, it all depends on your base coat as to how the candy turns out. If you never used candy paints before I'd suggest you gather all the info you can and use only good quality paint, if not it can be a very expensive lesson.
Heres a link to House of Kolor: http://www.houseofkolor.com/index.jsp

Here's a better link: http://www.tcpglobal.com/HokPaint/

I've never heard anything bad about anything from TCP Global, including the HOK stuff.

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

I've used the Duplicolor, and a few others.I heartily agree with Terryj. Candy colors must be mixed perfectly, the gun must be adjusted perfectly, air pressure exact, and surface prep/basecoat has to be flawless. It is very easy to get "tiger-striping",heavy spots, etc.,especially with larger areas. I would suggest a lot of practice, first, and use an HVLP gun, with air pressure of 15-18 psi. Prime and base coats should be finish sanded with 1000-2000 grit, and thoroughly cleaned with prep-sol,before candy is applied. When candy paint is mixed,it should be done in a clear jar.It will look black, until the jar is tipped ,slightly,at which time it should show the true final color. Each coat will not only deepen the tone, but will also magnify any goofs. PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE! I've done auto painting for several years, and candy is still a tough job.

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

Awesome, thanks for the great advice guys! I've got a buddy helpin me build my truck, he'll be painting it for me. He's painted something like 300 cars in the last 15-20 years, and is a total whiz kid when it comes to this stuff. His work always looks amazing, so I'm not too worried about him messing stuff up...however, I dont know for sure if he's ever actually used candy paint. I'll definitely be doing a LOT of research before we get too hot and heavy on the paint!
Would yall suggest maybe just using a metallic paint (or something else?) instead of candy? Would that be safer/easier? I'm on a shoestring budget here, so if I can avoid having to paint stuff twice to fix mistakes, that's what I wanna shoot for, lol

Your friend has probably used candy colors,then.If so,he shouldn't have a problem.Ask him,to be safe,though.

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

Metalics can be awesome paint jobs and are allot more forgiving than candies, all it takes is one mistake on a candy paint job to screw up the whole thing. There is no going back and touching up a candy paint job, because each layer makes for a different hue of color.

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

I've had candy paint jobs before on a few past vehicles and they look great until you have a fender bender or something. You will have to have the entire vehicle repainted because it so difficult to match the color back exactly

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

Yall bring up some good points! Thanks for all the advice, I think I'll probably end up just going with a metallic paint instead of messing with candy. Gotta do some research and figure out what the best product would be for my budget...any suggestions?

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

I painted a motorcycle with duplicolor base and their clear, thats what the costumoer supplied, the clear was a POS poor quality, but what do you expect for like 23 a quart, as for there candy i have no idea. U stated candy green and candy black and silver, there is no such thing as candy black or candy silver. The real way of achieving a candy coat is spraying a translucent coat over a silver or gold etc,
Depends on youre budget but if you want good results go with HOK they are the candy masters.

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

found these pics forgot the name but its duplicolor white with their clear.
their clear is not the greatest it doesnt like to be stacked so you cant really color sand it best bet is to shoot it flat with no peel

Re: Candy paint...anybody out there used it?

I'll post some pics of a bike helmet I painted for my kid,it's all ppg .white base, then silver metallic ,then a candy purple, finally clear.she wanted a pony on it so I drew the pony right on the silver with a sharpie ,also masked the flame pattern then, shot a few coats of candy till I got the color I wanted.the more coats you apply the darker it will get.if you need to match it will be very difficult to do so,so it's not usually recommended on a daily driver.but youll get crazy cool points for the balls to run candy paint everyday.
