Exclamation Oil Filter Question

I've run my 5.3 swap a few times in the driveway for a few minutes at a time, and never had problems until I got to the exhaust shop. After we unloaded the truck, I started it up again to put it in the right place. That last time I ran it, the oil filter started spewing oil. At least I think its the oil filter because that was the only thing dripping when we shut off the motor.

The place was closing soon, so we took the time to clean up and I pulled the oil filter to check and see if it was double gasketed by mistake. Not the case. I did put the filter on as tight as I could by hand, and it was only later that my buddy mentioned that friend of his, who is also a dealer tech, puts the filter on his 6.0 with a wrench, which I've always thought has been a no-no. Are these engines an exception to the rule?

Am I just a massive idiot for putting the oil filter on not tight enough, or do I have a bigger problem? I'm confused as to why it happened after I ran it a while. The filter wasn't junk - I used a stock ACDelco filter.

I plan on going back there tomorrow with a fresh filter and oil to see if I can get it resolved. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Oil Filter Question

I just use the 3/4 - 1 turn standard on my 6.0 but I always use the filter wrench to do it.

Re: Oil Filter Question

I think after the filter gets tight by hand 1/2 to one turn more is normal.
You should be ok to tighten and check. Who knows the filter may be flawed.
On a oil change i wipe the filter contact area clean then put a very light film of oil on the filter gasket and reinstall, and then snug it nice. Good luck

Re: Oil Filter Question

I never put them on with a wrench, only hand tight and have never had a problem. I have seen claw type wrenches put small holes in the filter and cause leaks. Did you take off the bypass above the filter? Maybe it's leaking there?

Re: Oil Filter Question

Good and hand tight is all I have ever done. Maybe it was the block off above the filter.

Re: Oil Filter Question

It was hand-tight when I put it on...the bypass plate was another idea that came about after the fact. Gonna check that in the morning...Thanks!

Re: Oil Filter Question

Checked this morning and no signs of leakage on the bypass plate. Tightened on the new filter, filled 'er up, and it ran without puking everywhere...so now she's on the lift getting her new exhaust put on!
