Straightening a bumper
How would you guys go about straightening a small dent in one of those heavy bumpers on my 80 squarebody.
Do you think heating it with a propane torch and whacking on it with a small sledge would work or would that be fruitless, its not big or anything but something id like to fix. |

Re: Straightening a bumper
I straighten mine using the cold method. I take a pipe wrench and get leverage against the dent. I'll weld plate to it for larger areas. but an large wrench does do the trick

Re: Straightening a bumper
I've had good luck using a hydraulic shop press to straighten out dents in the bumpers on 60's/70's trucks.
I usually put a block of hardwood on top of the press plates to protect the finish (especially on chrome bumpers). And often use a chunk of thick steel plate between the press and backside of the bumper to spread out the load. If the very edge of the bumper is bent or slightly twisted, a large crescent wrench works good to straighten it out. |
