72 gas tank relocation ??

I want to relocate my in cab tank to under the bed, is there a kit out there or could I use the tank out of an 87 parts truck my father inlaw has sitting at his house... If I can use that tank from the 87 what would I have to do to accomplish the switch...

Re: 72 gas tank relocation ??

I haven't done this yet myself, and I'm sure others will know much more than me.

But from what I've read, the 85 blazer tank fits perfectly in the frame of the 72, straps and everything. I don't know about an 87 pickup tank though.

Re: 72 gas tank relocation ??

I think the blazer tank is a good option for value. There's a member here that makes nice aluminum tanks too. Be aware the filler neck routing for the blazer tank isn't a direct fit and requires some cutting and fab work. I wanted to relocate my tank but at some point came to the conclusion that it's been back there for 40 years working just fine...

Re: 72 gas tank relocation ??

Tired of the fumes in my cab, I utilized the small Blazer tank for my very low 68 stepside. I believe it holds about 17 gallons and doesn't hang down so low that it scrapes on everything. Then I fitted a filler and door assembly from (now get this) a Ford Ranger pickup into the rear of my left rear fender. Works slick. I'd attach a photo if I knew how. Remember, this unit is a non vented system so you must add a vent tube to the gas tank. Just be sure to put plenty of coils in it so that it won't splash out gas when you hammer the throttle.

Re: 72 gas tank relocation ??

You'll have to use a blazer tank, as the square body pick up tank won't fit anywhere.
