Re: 55 2nd series

Got a little work done this weekend but of course UPS did not deliver what I really wanted but it will be here tomorrow. Got the electric choke for my carb and installed my shifter.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Re: 55 2nd series

Also here is the color I think I'm going to paint my motor (burnt copper). My wife hates the color but I told her she'll never look at the motor anyways. That is the color that I wanted to paint the whole truck but she nixed that.

Yeah it is tight but it is not binding up I'm still debating on getting different headers.

Looks tight but if it doesn't bind it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: 55 2nd series

I need some help. I pulled the motor out and started cleaning it up but I need to know if there is an easier way. I used a can and a half of brake cleaner just for the clean side. Any suggestions? Also how to get the rust off?

Re: 55 2nd series

I used simple green and a stiff brush to clean up mine. Use it full strength and let it soak for a while. It works pretty good.
A wire wheel should take care of the rust.

Re: 55 2nd series

Use CLR, that's calcium lime rust remover, and wad up some aluminum foil or a wire brush. Hit with baking soda to neutralize it before you paint.

Re: 55 2nd series

my only parts washer is a gallon jug of mineral spirits from home depot and my oil drain pan
i have a stiff parts cleaner brush from parts store
i drill an 1/8'' hole in the lid so i can spray right out of the jug

mineral spirits is cheap, i maybe used 4 gallons over the years.
just recycle it with your used motor oil

Thanks for the suggestions I'll be back at it tomorrow. Had my 3yr wedding anniversary tonight (I really wanted to work on the motor).

Remember that your motor will torque over a bit when you stand on the throttle. You want to take that into account when thinking it's not going to bind up. Pictures can be deceiving, but it sure looks tight to me. I hope it works for you.

That is why I was thinking about different headers.
