Installing DRL's in a '90 Burb

Well I've had this GM GOODWRENCH Daytime running light module for about 31/2 years now. and am finally getting around to utilizing it. It's a discontinued part that is still in stock at a few dealerships around the states. Part number is 12370131 if anyone's interested in getting one as well just ask your local dealer to do a dealer to dealer search for it.
Basically what this does is it turns on your low beams with a reduced voltage of around 8-10 volts when the ignition key is turned on and when you turn on your headlights, it cuts off and you get full power to your headlights.
However.....A couple of years ago I installed H.I.D. headlights thusly rendering my usage of this module a no go because there was no way I could install this between the H.I.D. controller/ignitor and the bulbs themselves because of the high voltage output of the controller/ignitor. Nor would it work putting it before the C/I without risking doing damage to it.

Plus.... I.......lost the instructions for it.

Here's a pic of it.

I found some 8" wideX 1" tall switchback L.E.D. style DRL's on EBAY that are a simple 3 wire hook up (GROUND DRL AND TURN) Basically when hooked up, they will be white until you activate the turn signal then they will flash back and forth from white to amber.

Testing them with a nine volt battery...

After getting these I found thet they were small enough to fit in my front turn signal housings with little modifications to the housing itself. So I decided to install these and hook them up to the DRL MODULE mentioned above... One problem though, Still no wiring instructions for the module.
Well as luck would have it, a dealership up in Fairbanks happened to have 9 of these modules in stock and after a quick call to them, they were kind enough to fax the installation instructions to me. THANK YOU AURORA MOTORS!!!

Re: Installing DRL's in a '90 Burb

So after getting the instructions I tagged all the wires so I would know which wire went where
RED = FUSED(15A) BATTERY POWER
BLACK = GROUND
PINK = IGNITION POWER
WHITE = PARKING BRAKE SWITCH (IF DESIRED)
BROWN = PARKING LIGHT CIRCUIT
TAN = TO LOW BEAM CIRCUIT

aAlthough for my installation I will be switching up the BROWN & TAN wires. This way, the DRL's will still be on with my parking lights but will shut off when I turn on the headlights.

I've had an extra set of front turn signal housings laying around the house for awhile so I used them to mount the lights into. I used a hack saw blade to seperate the front lense from the back of the housing.

For the parking light function I purchased four 12" long 3 chip amber light strips from V-LEDS.COM and installed 2 into each lense assembly.

Re: Installing DRL's in a '90 Burb

I had a couple pieces of perforated universal circuit board I got from Radio shack that I trimmed to size to fit inside the housings then I cut an opening in the ceter of them to fit the lights into. I had to cut a bit out of the center of the backside of the housings for the DRL's to fit inside proper. I then glued the DRL's the the board, the boards to the housings and the lenses back onto the housing using "AUTOMOTIVE SUPER GOOP"

I also sealed up the area I cut out on the backside as well.

Re: Installing DRL's in a '90 Burb

I didn't want to cut and splice into the harness any more than I had to so I took two 3457 bulbs, crushed the glass and wired up the parking, turn and all grounds to the bases so I could simply plug them into the sockets then just run a lead from the module to the DRL's.
Using my fluke meter I found which terminal was what in the sockets and soldered the wires to the appropriate leads on the bases.

Tomorrow (monday 03/19/12) I'll finish the install on the Suburban and post more pics of them working on the 'Burb
