Speedo cable leaking?

My 67 has been sitting all winter and the speedo cable has been leaking.I replaced the speedo bullet with one with good seals but its still dripping out of the cable right after where its crimped on to the spiraled cable jacket. Is it time for a new speedo cable? I noticed that these cables dont have the plastic coating on them like most other gms. I have some other speedo cables layin around but just thought I would ask too see if this is a common problem and to get some advice

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

I've never had one leak where you're talking about, usually right at the housing. Is that black strip an o-ring? Perhaps a new o-ring and retaining clip? I'd say possibly it's leaking and traveling to the part you're talking about, but I don't know how it would w/o you seeing it further towards the housing as well. Or maybe it did, and some oil collected there, and stopped leaking, and the trail from the housing to where it's crimped drained down and you can only see where's it's collected. I dunno?

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

Their is also an inner seal that seals around the speedo gear that is replaceable. Also check the speedo gear carefully you will probably see a groove or wear mark on the gear where the seal rides on this is usually the issues for the leak. Also to replace the inner seal, just look at the side the cable connects you should see some sort of a wire clip. Pull that out then remove the seal pay close attention to the way this seal comes out most people reinstall the seal backwards and wonder why it still leaks.

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

Well the old speedo gear did have a nice groove around it where the seal was. So i had two other trannys and the one that was the most dry went in with a little grease smeared on it was a nice good tight fit so i filled the trans again and watched the crimped part start to drip very slowly. now over nite it made a 5" wet spot on the floor. Ive never seen one leak here either this is why I asked. The only think I can think of is the inner seal for the gear but this one was from a clean dry tranny full of fluid that didnt leak and the seal and the lil' ring clip was in the rite way an in good shape I hate chasing leaks

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

How long did those other dry parts sit around for they also have a tendency for the seal to dry up did you also check the gear and seal on the new piece you put in. I use to work in a gm dealer ship back in the mid eighties and chased these leaks all the time our fix was new speedo gear an speedo gear seal new o ring bullet seal. Also when looking at speedo gear seal you need to also feel if the seal is still pliable

the inner seal is pictured here, you may have to get one from a tranmission shop.

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

Thats the culprit its gotta be! now I just gotta locate a new one. I found just the seals online but Im gonna check the nearby trans shops this week.while im in there maybe they could point me in the rite direction matching the speedo gear to the rear for a more accurate mph it seems too be about 5-6 mph off

If it's leaking out of the cable it has to be this seal. The cable doesn't seal anything. The new steel bullets are the way to go. The aluminum ones have a replaceable seal also, but they wear out and the gear will woble in them. A trans shop should be able to get a steel one or just a replacement seal. There is a seal for the steel bullet and a different one for the aluminum one. Usually the seal in the new steel speedo bullet aren't pressed in quite all the way and sometimes won't seal. I use a 5/16 socket and tap it in a little farther.

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

Ive been checking it since Ive fiddle with it and its still drippin from the cable. so its gotta be the inner seal, even though this one looked good. the o ring looks like its holding cause there is no fluid on the threads of the bullet only on the cable and cable nut.I will try to push the inner seal in later to just see if it helps.Im not too sure on how the "steel bullet" could be wearing out. it dosnt move only the spinning plastic gear shaft inside it although the gear didnt look worn (like the first one had the groove where the seal was) but it could be. My truck had the 6 lug 411 posi that was swapped for a 373 open 5 lugger.eventually I will put the posi carrier back in but its gonna stay 373.hoping the shop or anybody here can tell me witch gear too get when I replace the whole bullet cause I hate leaks. I noticed some are color coded but all the gears I have are the whiteish opaque colored ones.Iguess I should count theteeth too

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

NAPA lists one for my 71 TH350. You don't indicate what transmission you have, but you might check with them. Here is the one listed for my transmission: ($1.49)

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

That's what I was told. They had to get one from the warehouse. Seems to make sense - has slightly over 1/4" inside diameter and is listed as speedometer pinion seal. I replaced the o ring yesterday ( which they had) and I'll have to check today to see if that cured its dripping (I doubt it).

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

If you didn't live on the other side of the country you could stop by my shop, I would give you the seal. I keep them in stock, both for the aluminum and steel bullets. I would guess that any tranny shop would have them. Just to clarify it's not the steel bullets but the aluminum ones that will wear. The steel bullets have a little metal clad seal, the aluminum ones have a small rubber seal held in with a small wire ring. There is anough room in the alumunum bullets to put 2 seals in, sometimes that helps, but the steel one is the way to go. Somewhere on this site is a chart with ratios and speedo gear listing, I've seen it, but can't find it again. If you can't find the seals, I would be glad to send you one. Something I just thought of, the early steel bullets didn't have a seal at all or a way to install one. You might have one of those. All the replacement ones have a seal.

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

I just wanted too say thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction. For some reason I wouldve never thought of the "trans shop" just so used to going to the parts counter or mail order for stuff anymore .I'll chime back in with my results then. I couldnt imagine being an old chevy truck owner an not knowing this site. thanks guys

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

once again guys thanks for the info on dealing with this.On the way home from the trans shop I was thinking that I really do like "wet spots" but not under my vehicles So heres the new bullet, inner seal, o-ring,and gear. and old goalie hit the nail on the head the very first bullet I pulled out of the trans was a older manual trans bullet that didnt have a inner seal because it mounted at an upwards angle in the trans(no wander it leaked so bad)that one was in it when I bought the truck and it had silicone all over it(love that stuff)before I ever drove the truck it got replaced with another but still leaked(not as bad though)I put the others i had back in the trannys i have stashed for a rainy day. I did grab two bullets from the j-yard over the weekend. I didnt even bother too try them but I did take them to the shop with me.And after gabbing for a while I asked "how much 4 em".he said lets trade the two bullets for the one new one! great! then he said that if the speedo was still off too bring it back and we'll try another. I thought cool.In the end trans is filled an still hasnt dripped yet

Re: Speedo cable leaking?

You can get the entire bullet with seals or just the seal from here:

http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-00047338a.htm

Might as well get the whole thing for 5 bucks
