Replacing freeze plugs,painting engine area..

On my 74 C10, gonna have all my freeze plugs replaced, and the following gaskets/seals replaced-front main seal and rear seal,valve cover gaskets,rebuild kit for my Edlebrock carb, and since my motor is being pulled out for the freeze plug replacing, its gonna get degreased and painted. The 74's originally had the motors painted reddish orange correct? Was thinking about painting it black since the fenderwels and other areas are already painted black. And as time goes by little by little i will be adding and replacing things and getting them in chrome so they will stand out against the black. But I really like the look of the reddish color on the motor when done right. How about some pics of the motors some of you all have so I can check out how they look in different colors for those of you that have theirs painted.

Heres mine man. On my 350 i went with all black. Its duplicolor engine paint it stands up well, i dont paint over freeze plugs like the natural look of them. It has an edelbrock endurashine intake just need the endurashine carb. Its not really clean under hood but its something.

Heres some of the stock 305 when it was fully rebuilt with all smog equipment and the 2 barrel carb. Then changed intakes and carbs. On the 305 i painted the block black and the heads the cast aluminum color. But the silver didnt hold up as well as the black. They also sell a clear that might have helped it. Just a few pics man

I had good results using POR-15 Engine Enamel. One quart (black or chevy orange) is more than enough to do one engine. Stuff goes on with a brush which allows for a greater control vs. rattle can. Once paint dries it maintains that wet look.
For '74 model year truck it you should use chevy orange, but as my Elmer used to say engines are color blind.

Well, I'll have to oblige...


This engine came from a swap meet - very cheap. It is 3970010 block circa 1971. My machinist indicated that this is probably one of the last higher Nickel content blocks GM produced. To cut machining cost GM reduced Nickel levels in mid 70's into the 80's.


Engine is mounted on the stand - starting the tear down. Lots of oil crud indicating infrequent oil changes.


and this is a result of infrequent oil changes - #3 connecting rod bearings has spun rendering Crankshaft unrepairable! The 4-bolt main block however is in good shape along with Nodular main caps.
