part out v. sell

If one has a driveable street legal titled truck, is it more cost effective to part it out or sell out right?

In this case the truck is a 73 SWB with a mild drop (couple inches), mildly built 350 4 bolt main with roughly 5k miles on a rebuilt motor, 700R4 with bowtie overdrive kit, and 12 bolt 4.10 posi rear end. The cab is pretty sound except for outer cab corners and the interior is incomplete, but mostly restored.

The frame is straight. The body is the main problem. Fenders are rusted through, bed is rusted through in multiple places and not salvageable. All other body parts just need prep and paint.

I can post some pics later on, but just trying to get an idea right now.

Usually parting out gets more $, but if most of the body is bad but cab is fixable with title, good frame, good drive train, you might come out as good or better selling complete. Just my guess.

When the body begins to get large patches of cancer but it's still mechanically sound it's better to sell it out right. If it were to have a bad motor but a decent body it would go the other way

The sheet metal is the big sellers for me. All the little trinkits you acquire from parting out seem to lay around a bit for me. Every now and then you find someone looking for some little odd and end, but the big stuff is what moves if you price it reasonable.

So if the body is riddled with cancer but it is a streetable truck, I'd sell it as is and be done with it.

I say sell it outright and let somebody restore it. Parting it out may bring you more money in the long run but you will more than likely have to sit on the parts for a long time before you got rid of enough to make what you could sell the whole truck for now.

Sounds like it came from Corpus...

I'd buy it, pull the rusty fleet bed and mount the stepside from my '81. Just sayin'...

Thanks guys. Just trying to get some things worked out. Guess the next step is a rough appraisal.

I agree that its prolly better to sell outright as opposed to parting it, but please be aware that this kind of thread can get out of hand here if you are not a subscribing member as often it turns into a thread with offers for parts and or the whole truck, and then I or others have to step in and then despite a well meant question, feathers get ruffled..

Re: part out v. sell

I see ads in the local shopper that offer to buy your truck for $350 minimum. I think the pickups get more - like $450 for scrap. Like Randy said, if you have a lot of good parts on the interior and under the hood odds and ends, you might be able to take those off and sell them here, then scrap the rest.
I think you get more for scrap if you remove all of the plastic and non- metal parts prior to scrap. I remember I got about $40 for my scrap copper radiator when I installed a new one - but I was told to separate the brass top from the copper core and metal supports to get more money.

aww, you're playing us a song! How sweet of you!!

Anyway, feel free to discuss it and walk through your plans. It does help to work things out. That was just a reminder to others not to hound you on stuff.

If you want a valuation, feel free to start a post in the WIW area. Good luck in whatever you decide.
