67 Tailgate
I am building a 67 and I am wondering if there is a difference between tailgates from 67-72. Thanks for any help I need to replace my tailgate bad and want to make sure that it matches.

Re: 67 Tailgate
Yes there is a slight difference ,but it will not affect the fit on your truck,
I will see if I can find some pictures to show you.

Re: 67 Tailgate
thats not the only difference. i know for a fact that the picture shown of the early style carries goes from 67 to 68 for sure. there is a 67 tailgate, a 68 tailgate and a 69 72 tailgate.

Re: 67 Tailgate
here is a picture of a 67 tailgate. i know that this is a one year only tailgate. look for this "speedbump" that runs along the whole end.

Re: 67 Tailgate
not an expert, but this is what I found so far.
67 gate speed bump all the way up 68 gate speed bump has a gap in it 69 to 72 speed bump 1/2 way up and then a dimple. |

Re: 67 Tailgate
Thanks Curt for the better pictures, now we just need one of the old timers (or young guys like you) to tell us his secrets on when each stamping went into production. thanks Russ

Re: 67 Tailgate
Haha, no secrets here but i did research this more today. The first pic (orange gate) is the same gate my 68 has. Pretty sure it's the original gate to the 68. Maroon is the 67 and from what I'm seeing is 69+ is the gate with the dimple. Also the 67 and 68 gate have the same outer stamping (no lip) on the outside where as the 69+ dimple gate has the lip in the stamp. No expert but just looking at what trucks I have

Re: 67 Tailgate
Had no idea there were any differences, BUT, But because they are Chevrolet pickups they will all interchange from 67-72, fit wise.
If they were from one on the lesser brands, that deal ain't happen'n!!! |

Re: 67 Tailgate
bringing this thread back up...
Here is a takeoff tailgate I have. As others have shown above, it has stampings consistent with the 1968 tailgates. However, it has the lower trim that did not begin until 1969. Additionally, I am fairly certain the color is 507 light blue...1969 was the last year to order light blue for these trucks from what I have researched. So perhaps it is at least one example of a 1969 tailgate with the same stamping as a 1968 tailgate. |
