6 cyl starter brace pictures?

Does anyone have a good picture of the brace/bracket at the rear of the starter? I went to put what I thought was the correct one on my 292, and it's nowhere close fitting.

I've had my '68 C/10 stepside w/292 since 1973, and I don't remember there ever being a starter brace except in some illustrations in the Chevy Service Manual. Of course I might have lost it, I was relatively young[and inexperienced] when I bought my truck. Unless you're stump jumping or boonie whomping, you really don't need one.

Same here... Never seen one except in pics. I guess most owners/mechanics would just dispense with it since it's not needed.

I've always used them-always figured they were important. I guess I won't lose any sleep over it, but I would like to have it if I can figure it out.

Maybe you have the right bracket but a different starter than stock.

There were at least six different L6 starters that I'm aware of and not all take that brace .

I don't think GM put on anything that wasn't important as " extra " parts reduce the profit margin .

That being said , I know that often the holes don't quite line up ~ you can egg shape the hole in the bracket with a rat tail file to make it work .

Typically only the heavy duty (longer Field Coil) starters use these but I'd add it to any engine I had just as a prophylactic measure .

True, but when these trucks were built they were primarily for farm, ranch or industrial use. Most back roads were dirt, gravel, caliche or full of pot-holes (still are in some cases) so a brace may have been a safeguard.

These days, with most of them used as leisure or fun and on paved roads it's not a necessary item unless one wants to be period correct.

My 68 GMC with 250 six three speed was completely original when I got it from a rancher friend and didn't have one.

Dang it. I didn't even think about a different starter. Of course it's a different starter. This motor came out of a 4 speed truck and the starter was bolted to the bell housing. I'm bolting it to an automatic, so the starter now has to be bolted to the block. That solves the mystery of why my old one don't fit. I'll just have to keep my eye out junkyardin' and maybe one will turn up. I'm not going to worry about it 'till then.

I guess I'll hang on to it. I am going to build another 292 for my green '68, and it does have a 4 speed. Nice try, though
