Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Well you've gone and done it. You've made me feel jealous, inadequate, and a couple of other emotions. This is pretty much the truck that I have been looking for! Gotta have 4x4 and maybe a plow mount for winter time up here in CO. I settled on a '48 1 1/2 ton (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...58#post5397758) for now, but after seeing this I know there is no way that I can be satisfied. You've got me thinking of posting my new '48 for sale before I even start working on her!

I really liked the idea of the 4bt...whatever happened to that engine?

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We just moved to a new place with shop space and have been working on getting everything organized. I kept the truck running to keep it easy to move around, but it's "scheduled" to get worked on soon! I really hope to have a rolling chassis in the next few weeks...months...eventually

Well, I think we all know how the "eventually" is. Whether it gets done in weeks...months...years...oh hell it'll get done eventually. Just thought I'd ask. I've run through the whole build several times. Would love to see that thing on that newer chassis with a full 4x4 conversion.

Orrie where did you find this picture. I would like to get some more info about that shop.

How do yall think that pinon brake will work? Do you plan on doing a rear disc swap on that 14 bolt?

The output brake "should" work fairly well...don't think I'd trust my life to it, but it should hold the truck in place within reason. My boy got all the parts together a year or so ago to do a rear disc set-up on the 14B...we will probably build up another 14B housing for the new rolling chassis and keep the truck driving until the last second.

Couple pics at the new place...

I think I may have ya beat on the 4x4 conversion. I'm in the process of converting my '92 shortbed to a Z71. Working on stripping the Z71 frame, then it's gonna get some new parts, get the frame all done, then drop my 350 from my 92 in it, and my 700r4 and transfer case from my 88. HOPE to have it done within the next couple of months.

Thanks for tuning in 6BT...your build is looking fantastic. You should be running by summer! I'm jealous...hurry and get it running, I need the motivation!

Dub, your build sounds great. Good luck on making your goal of a couple months...I NEVER do!

I got the frame stripped today, so next step is clean it, sand blast it, paint it, and install what I'm gonna use.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

Man that truck is awesome. Is there any specific reason yall are moving to the later model frame? It seems like y'all could bolt that Dana 60 under the front of the existing frame and drop the new drivetrain in. This truck is so cool. I don't know if I can state that enough. I like how plain Jane it is right now.

The stock frame has been butchered in the rear and its just easier to adapt a later (stronger) model frame. Thanks for the props!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

So...we've started to work on the new chassis a bit. We torched about 4 ft out of the middle of the frame (the dropped part) and welded it back up. This gives us a later model 4x4 frame with all the suspension/drivetrain mounts we need and a flat center frame section like the original. We also torched out the rivets for the crossmember at the front of the rear springs and flipped it to create clearance for the ram.

We had the frame sandblasted before coating it with about a dozen cans of glossy black.

We're starting to bolt parts to it now...

Right now you're just past me. My frame is still sitting on a rotisserie; not completely cleaned. This wet weather and no real shop has been stopping me.

Giggidy! Are you worried about the overall width of the 60 compared to the stock 2wd front axle?
