Cool Plug wires, please, help

Ok, I wasn't home and a mechanic came over to look at the ac unit, long story short my plug wires weren't connected on the 2,4,6,8 side and he decides to switch the little white numbers on my msd plugs. My mom allowed this to happen, she said he told her the #2 plug was in the wrong place, but she says he just switched the numbers around, the the plugs on the cap. And the truck ran great the way the wires were before, so my question is could this a$$hole damage my engine, or cause it to not start?

#2 plug is on the right side of the distrib cap, #4 is right behind the carb on left side, #6 is right behind #4 on cap, skips a plug and #8 is in front of firewall on the left side. Is this correct?

I'm a novice so, don't be too hard on me for not knowing. Thanks in advance for your help, it is appreciated.

Re: Plug wires, please, help

Hey, good for you for digging in and fixing it yourself! Google a "chevy 305 firing order" and it will give you many diagrams of the numbered cylinders as well as the distributor order and position. I think it is out of order now. Should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 working clockwise around the cap.
The wrong order will not do damage to the engine, just run like crap, or not at all. Kills the gas mileage as well. All this info will be in a Haynes or Chilton book that is a must have for anyone turning wrenches on a good old Chev. You can order them used for a few bucks.
Again, good for you.
