Much better!......

Yesterday I spent the better half of the afternoon scrubbing the body of my newly acquired Longhorn. I dont think it had a bath in YEARS! The inside stunk to high heaven of stale cig smoke...not anymore!.. oh yeah on emore thing....NO MORE SHELL! I still have it,but took it off 'cause I have to get it weighed since the ole guy had disabled plates on it. 5000lbs and under is $80 weight fee, anything 5001 to 6000 is $154, so my truck is now on a diet!

Looks great!!
When I lived out there, I tried to fight them on that whole registering and weight thing. Making you register it as a commercial vehicle based on the fact that you MAY carry something seems wrong and there were many people that I talked to that owned trucks that didn't have to do that.

Looks great. Keep in mind that although you save some weight on the scales with the cap - DMV will charge you for a "commercial" tag if you do NOT have a shell on a pickup. So, they're gonna screw you one way or the other.

EDIT: Oops, sorry, simo post. I went to the scales and DMV without a shell. Had to pay well over $100 for the commercial tag, and they didn't give me a choice as to whether or not I wanted it. I've never, nor will I ever, haul anything but my dog in the back of this truck bed. Ironically, I do all my "commercial" hauling on the other truck i have that DOES have a shell, and of course there was no commercial fee. As beautiful as the weather is out here, CA is one screwed up state sometimes.

You may even need to have carpet in the bed area even with the camper. Make sure to ask them before you do all the work

You will pay the commercial fee without the camper on it, there is no way around it. You will end up paying the $154 fee since it is a 3/4 ton truck.

If I can keep it under 5001lbs then it's only $80,so off comes the tailgate,rear bumper and anything else I can unbolt!

My son wants me to keep the shell for camping and fishing trips.

That is GROSS! I had a '73 that came from the desert last year. The cab was just like that. But the bed was 1/4 FULL of rat crap! Called pick-a-part and sold it to them!

Ran the numbers and with the options we are looking at about 4700curb including an extrapolated number for the aux tanks. Do a quick drive over at a local truck scale before you kill yourself on this. Most places won't charge if you don't need a printout.

Truck looks great! I bought a 78 one ton dually a few years ago. I had to wash the windshield...on the inside with the squeegee thing just so I could see out of it. The chewing tobacco residue was so thick on the inside of the drivers window that I had to scrape it off before I could wash that. I think the rat poop that 70chev posted tops my whining. Gross...

Some people just done know how to chew! I just stopped chewin(dippin Skoal,Copenhagen) a month ago. Did it since I was 17 Im 41 now,but NEVER was a slob like that!

Yeah looks like a nice set of buddies, hopefully the rats didn't get to them too! Although from what I've seen, I think rats and mice REALLY like the 67-72 foam in the seats of these trucks

My guess is that you will pay the higher fee. I have registered several trucks, and the 3/4 trucks always get the higher fee, and the 1/2 trucks always get the lower fee, regardless of the weight. Every person I have talked to that owns a 3/4 here pays between 150-200 for the weight fee. Not trying to start an argument, just giving you a heads-up and speaking from personal experience. Good luck, and I hope you get a lower fee!

My C20 gets the weight fee of 150 something ... I have a friend with a C20 and pays it as well... Thats the downside of owning a 3/4 ton.... but on a good note, NICE LOOKING TRUCK

Mine weighed in at 4400 lbs. and my weight fee is $80.

The total per year breaks down like this:

Registration fee.......$69
License Fee................8
Weight Fee...............80
County/District Fees....8

TOTAL....................$165

Your truck cleaned up real nice !

You pay on the total Gross weight of the truck an not the net weight.

We do that here too but it is a bit lower.

My 71 3/4ton weighs around 4400 with me and my dog in it when we leave the dump once a month but the truck's gross tonnage is 6000lbs and that is what I pay license on. I went out and looked at the registration and the registration for 6K gross was 40.00 along with a 3.00 filing fee and a 5.00 fee for the license office I went to. If I had gone to the courthouse I could have saved that 5.00 but probably would have had to wait in line for 30 minutes or longer. We used to have to pay an excise tax on the assessed value of the vehicle every year that added quite a bit to the fees. A new Porsche had about 1000.00 excise tax every year.

By the way "commercial" doesn't mean that you actually use it in a business. That means it is a truck or van that isn't primarily intended to haul passengers and has a given load capacity.

We get burned on trucks or vans that are converted to "motorhomes here as while we get to have car tabs on them we have to pay a 75.00 motorhome fee on top of the tabs.

Well, I went to AAA last friday and registered the truck....$15! didnt even need a weight cert! The PO just paid $83 for next years registration and all I had to pay is the $15 transfer fee. Didnt have to pay the weight fee! Kinda weird,but cool none the less.

Did you ever end up actually weighing the truck or did you drop by AAA first? Just wanted to see how close my numbers were.
