Steering Column Rebuild Threads ???

Have done some searching, but have not found any threads on rebuilding a steering column.

My signal lever is pretty much flopping around as it pleases, and I think that new top and bottom bearings would be a good move. Trouble is I have never had one apart, and haven't any idea what it should look like, and how to tell what needs to be done.

If anyone could refer me to a thread, or threads, or website that would help, that would be awesome.

there is a guy on here that rebuilds them and might be able to help with what your looking for. "Kevsclassics" did an awesome job on mine. Good luck!

Well, I killed two birds with one stone! I found a steering column that seems in near perfect condition, complete with an original deluxe wheel and chrome horn ring. Only a few cracks on the backside of the wheel, and a couple other minor blemishes.

I rebuilt mine, top to bottom. Unfortunately, I didn't take any picks of the process. Mine is a 60, but I can't think your's would be much different.
It's pretty straight forward and easy. Both bearings and turn signal cam, not much more in there. I just wrote down the order I took stuff apart, drew a couple picks and reversed the order to put it back together. Pay attention to stuff like witch way the bearings come out, ect. My lower bearing had a shoulder on one end, and it would go in either way. Prolly don't matter, but who knows.... Mine was a three on the tree, I just left these parts out.

No, I didn't. Was hoping I'd someday run across a floor shift one without the "nub". Prolly mount my half sweep Mooneyes tach on it to help cover it up...

If I`m not mistaken, the bell ( portion where the signal switch is ) and the tube are separate pieces, if you find a bell from the GM line (Saginaw) within the same era they will swap out, wether it be from a nova or a C60...someone correct me if I`m wrong.

Thanks for posting Rich, appreciate the input. This is the new wheel/column I picked up on Saturday, haven't done anything other than look at it yet!

I am going to take pictures, and notes, and post up a thread when I am done. Maybe it will help someone else at some point.

For the purists I understand wanting to rebuild your column. But those that just want a working column, there are some very reasonably priced replacement columns on ebay.

An example,

This is a chromed, automatic column with no ignition. Perfect for those of us with dash mounted ignition. And its only $230 with free shipping.

Now they also have the raw stainless so you can paint them for $200. These are a "buy it now". I've also seen them occasionally listed on a bid auction. I bought one about 3 months ago, caught the auction and got it for only $110. I plan to paint it to match my interior. Its nothing fancy but its a nice column. It even has tilt.

Just an option other than having to rebuild.

Thanks, really appreciate the input. Most of the goodies that can be found on Ebay are in the US, and I am in true north strong and free, so not only does the free shipping not apply, but then I have duties and such as well. I often bring stuff up through my company's forwarding company in buffalo, but that is a no can do on private purchases.

I am dismantling my steering column, and need a bit of direction on this part. It is a 3 on the tree column, but I will not be using the shifter so I want to eliminate the shifter linkage. Not sure if this piece is press fit, or welded, or what. Can anyone help me?

The part I am referring to is the part on the tube that separates the two moving linkage parts (engine compartment end)

can somebody please dis-assemble an original steering column and tel what parts are there. i need a bearing because my steering wheel has play and its not related to the driving. it has play up/down.... any body has the part#???

there is an upper bearing which is kind of part and parcel of the signal switch mechanism, LMC, Classic Parts, et al have them in their catalogues.
there is also a bearing/bushing for the lower section, also listed in any of the after market parts catalogues.

Can anyone weigh in on how to remove the tab that is between the two shift levers as pictured above?

Craig you got something to clean it all off with like brake clean, I believe they are spot welded but you`ll need to clean it to confirm...

Thanks Rich, I will clean it up and see what I see. If it is welded on I may just cut it and the shift lever off to the point that I can fab a piece to match the outer tube of the column where these parts are currently exposed in the engine compartment. The linkage isn't being used so I just don't want to look at it every time I open the hood.

Mine all came out whein I disassembled the column from the top. Been awhile since I did it, but I dont recall cutting, drilling, grinding, BFHing anything. There should be a large tube that runs from the collar your shifter mounts to, down to this piece. When you remove the parts from the top, turn signal cam,, horn ect. This should slide right out...

I think its year specific, but the top bearing (more like a bushing) should come as part of the horn contact.

I didnt look at mine from a purist perspective, its just way cheaper to rebuild the OEM part... With the exception of not having tilt, they look just like the aftermarket ones. Plus, its a good little project for winter (father son kinda thing) ... This is not hard, very few parts, straight forward job.

There is also a Jeep part you may need. Its the rubber boot the covers the flexable coupler on engine side of firewall. Ill have to dig out part number, but noone makes this simpl, cheap part for our trucks...
