Clicking noise while rolling?
So I am getting this strange noise like a card in bike spokes. Could it be the U joint needle bearings? Gonna get under there tomorrow but maybe you can help me look in the right spots. Thank you, Timmy

That would be the first thing I would look at. That and the carrier bearing if it has a two piece drive shaft... LockDoc

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
Sounds like U-joint if it is a long bed check the carrier bearing second and please block the truck up don't trust the jack to hold up the truck while you are under it. Jim

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
I have the same sound coming out of my truck, mine only does it when I back up. I checked my u joints and they're fine. Intrested to see what you find!

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
Bad needle bearings in a joint normally sound like a rotational squeak or tweet. If its a rotational click or tick you may have a screw or something in a tire. Have a passenger ride with you and stick your heads out the window to verify its coming from the rear and which side.

They can look and feel fine but if they are dry (no grease) the needle bearings will catch inside the caps and click when it turns. Not saying that's the problem with yours but just something to consider... LockDoc

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
Funny you say that bmerdoc because last fall when I parked it , it was just a squeak. Then it was gone this spring. Now it's back! But diff noise. I have been hauling dirt, mulch furniture with the truck., so it's gotta be the carrier or the u joints. We will see tomorrow.

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
If it has gone from a squeak to a click you will probably find that the rear u joint has eaten a couple of the needle bearings and you will find missing bearings in the rear joint cups and a small pile of dust that used to be needle bearings. Pull it and inspect. Good luck and I hope its a cheap and easy fix.

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
Are you running a GM posi/limited slip locker? I just went through this with my Blazer. My rear end sounded fine driving straight foward and reverse. Put it a slow turn in reverse or foward and it made crackling sound and grabbed a bit. Checked everything - ujoints, lug nuts, springs. Turns out I used the cheaper differential fluid for the posi/limited slip. So, I purchased some "GM/AC Delco" posi/limited slip lube and differential fluid. Changed it out and problem solved. Sometimes being cheap dosen't save you any extra cash...

Well, found the problem and can't believe I have been driving this thing like this..I will let the pictures tell the story. I helped my father in law the day before taking 4 loads of furniture to his house. Can you believe that i was able to drive it?Much less do 70 down the highway? Gotta love a chevy

Re: Clicking noise while rolling?
Nice pics. Been there, done that. Good idea to replace the u-joints while you're at it. You'll need to take one apart to replace the bearing assembly anyway.
