Where to sell or trade?
I was curious if any of you guys have sold your truck lately and how did you advertize (ebay, craigslist, etc)? Just curious if anyone has recent experience and if anything was working better than others. I'm selling my truck and have not had much luck with the local craigslist.
Thanks

Re: Where to sell or trade?
The problem with craigslist (for me, anyway) is that it's non-trivial to search nationally and you can't set alerts. The board postings are great for finding projects, but I don't think there's a huge market amongst us for finished trucks.
So, as a buyer, I'll tell you where I search: eBay and Hemmings and carsonline.com. Be sure to read up on all of the eBay scams... they get fairly sophisticated. Even found pictures of my own vehicles on there "for sale". Of course 99.99% of the buyers are legit, but it's the 0.01% that will never fail to contact you with a great offer contingent on you accepting a cashier's check for $1000 over the price as long as you agree to send the balance to their friend. Or stuff like that. Don't let that scare you off though. A couple of tips: Make sure your title includes everything a real buyer would search for, because like me most people probably search by year and keyword. So get the year, type, model, engine, and key points all in the title, something like: 1967 Chevrolet Chevy C10 Stepside Shortbox Pickup Truck 1/2 ton (Or whatever, I don't know your truck). Some people fire in non-relevant keywords which annoy me (putting both GMC and Chevy in the title, for example). But make sure to include the things people will look for. Be sure to include a lot of good quality photos. I figure a dozen for a nice truck, maybe more... but not 50. Inlude the SPID and serial (it's in your window, it's not a secret, no idea why people are paranoid about disclosing it) if its useful for decoding. If you've replaced parts and have the originals (wheels, original block, etc) and are willing to include them, mention that for people that might want them. When I was looking for my truck I also searched Hemmings and a website called carsonline.com, which looks decidedly low-budget but a lot of serious cars get listed there. If you do list on eBay, keep an eye on your auction. If someone with low or negative or sketchy feedback bids, get in touch with them right away to get a sense if they're serious... no point in ruining your auction by selling it to someone who's not a real buyer and just ruins your auction.

Re: Where to sell or trade?
craigzoom no longer exists (dont know why--trademark infringement?)
Anyway, it has been replaced by zoomthelist.com this will give you a national search or by state or city--it works. I still dont think craigslist is a good place to try and sell a vehicle---if it is a high priced item. I buy there, but I dont waste time listing there for anything that I want a premium price out of.

Re: Where to sell or trade?
the ability to search all of craigslist is now adhunter - different entry page, same on the inside: http://www.adhuntr.com/
Aside from ebay, Hemmings, and Auto Trader Classics (horribly slow site, btw...) I routinely peruse the following: Old Ride http://www.oldride.com/classic_truck...1&offset=1&PG= Cars Online http://www.cars-on-line.com/ Connosr, just to see what they have, usually very nice, but also $$ - nice guy anyway http://www.connorsmotorcar.com/ American Dream Cars http://www.americandreamcars.com/collectorchevy.htm Classy Auto http://www.classyauto.com/search.php...79&sortby=year Classic Truck Central http://www.classictruckcentral.com/t...mfr_name=Chevy Purcelleville guy - VERY pricey, but some nice stuff http://www.championautomotive.net/pickupsforsale.html cars for sale.com http://www.carsforsale.com/find_a_ve...ueltypeid=&bt= Truck Shop - HIGH end stuff but gorgeous (the TN, not CA, Truck Shop) http://www.carsforsale.com/find_a_ve...ueltypeid=&bt= Classiccar.com http://www.classiccar.com/car/4036.html Classic Heartbeat Trucks http://www.classicheartbeat.com/trucks_for_sale1.htm One tip - when you go to the sites for the first time, search for what YOU are looking for, THEN save the resultant page as a "favorite" and from then on it will come up with the search already done... Hope this helps! |

Re: Where to sell or trade?
Hey 54 belair - thanks for the new national craigslist search location - just tried it and like it much better than "adhunter" that I've been using for a little while. Thanks!
