I tried to do the heater valve your way and it ended up hitting the cowl. Guess I have my unit mounted higher in the dash. I relocated it inside the kick panel. Not ideal but it fit. Been making and installing a/c and heater hose all day. This stuff is going to be a tight fit!
okgmc4, i missed your post. hope this isn't too late
best picture i could find
you can barely see it under the genII compac unit
drilled a hole into the vent box and out thru the side

Re: 58 TRUK intro

Thanks for the pic. That's kind of what I was thinking would have to happen, just unsure on whether I'll have to modify my kick panel to clear it that way. Thanks again.

In another thread you posted pic of a radiator cover, did you make that or buy it?

Re: 58 TRUK intro

radiator cover is all ogre

started with this

taped cardboard on top of the radiator like this

added more carboard and tape until it looked like this
also added 2 L brackets to tie it in to the top two radiator bolts

and this

wax everything and started glassing like this

removed it and added glass to the inside

and trimmed it up to look like this

then started filling and sanding, filling and sanding
block sand, block sand, block sand
prime, block sand, prime, block sand
add a dab of paint

before

after

the nice thing about fiberglass is that you can chose the shape
metal would have been angular and not to my liking

Re: 58 TRUK intro

i try to avoid rookie day, but i caved and headed over there
it was a 6 mile long, 5 lane parking lot, no one moved from 11am till they shut it down at 9pm
mostly minivans and new 4 door family haulers, it looked just like kmart parking lot
i went wed and fri evening, pretty nice those days. stop and go cruising, slow enough to check out the rides.
still too many new mustangs, camaros and challengers for my liking. but it is a public road
lots of nice classics, modifieds and hotrods out there all days

and where were you?

Re: 58 TRUK intro

this is typical view of the dream cruise
i count 11 cars in this picture, you can just barely see the corner of one chevelle
it's still worth the effort to go, even using those percentages and 100,000 cars
you will see 9090 cool cars

They shouldn't allow anything less than 20 years old on a cruise.

I couldn't make it. I'm involved coaching youth football and they always hold the draft the Sat of the dream cruise.

Next year I should take Friday off and go then. Would it be worth my drive? What day is the best to attend?

Re: 58 TRUK intro

definitely worth the drive.
friday is my preferred day but even then once the sun sets it comes to a stand still
we were out on friday from 3 to 7 and everything was smooth
in that 4 hrs we drove 8 mile road to 14 mile road and back, 12 miles total
i was out on saturday @ 3 and made it .5 mile in 1 hour
i hit the side roads and got out of there
they figured that there were 1.1 million people out there on saturday

power steering pump bracket

front end accessory drive brackets can get costly anywheres from $60 for a simple bracket to $2000 for a whole serpentine setup
i make everything.
this is my $5 power steering bracket

i had to replace my power steering pump this weekend and took some pics of the bracket
a couple of 10 ga plates, some 3/8'' heavy wall tubing and a couple of bolts

bare bracket

mounted on pump

2 washers under the mounting stud line the pulley up with the crank pulley

mounted on motor. uses the same bolt holes as the original truck front motor mounts

Re: 58 TRUK intro

the mustII rack on truk has always been a little twitchy, nothing really wrong with the steering just a floating sensation going down the road
i did a little research for using the gm saginaw pump with the ford rack and hydroboost
i found that the saginaw pumps flow at 3 gal per min vs the ford pump flow of 2 gpm
a couple of web sites and forums suggested changing the pressure and flow fitting in the gm pump to a lower flow fitting
i ordered the fitting a yr ago and with the new pump install i was able to change out the fitting
wow, does it make a difference. nothing noticeable now, i always noticed a floating sensation before.

the part number is cpfcv-k do a google search. i found mine on ebay, but year one and cpp have the same part as do a lot of vendors.

the fitting installed in the pump.

Re: 58 TRUK intro

when i went to murry's to get a new pump i asked the kid behind the counter for a 68 truck power steering pump.
nothing in stock...
so i asked for any gm steering pump on the shelf, i tried to explain that they are all the same from the 60s thru the 90s, maybe even later.
so we looked at 78, nope. 88? nope. 98? nope.
just grab a pump, need a number.
no, walk in back and grab a pump just to humor me. please.

he rolls his eyes, walks in back, comes out with a pump, looks up the number, it's for an 87 blazer.
we compare the pump to the old one, same pump.
we changed the pulley right there at the counter with the rental tool (it took 3 kits to find one that wasn't stripped)
i paid for the pump and told him to remember that all gm pumps are the same.

never did tell him it was going on a 58 chevy truck.
that would have blown his mind
