Old picture of my Dad's 910

For a truck my Dad had for 25+ years, you'd think I'd have a photo of it, but I don't. I guess that's the way it is with cars and trucks that are just "always" there. But in transfering some old VHS tapes to digital, I caught it in the background.

There was nothing particularly special about this truck... 307, TH400. Power steering but manual brakes, radio delete and not even a lighter. But it started every morning at -40F when it needed to, and we dug our backyard pool by hand, loading the dirt up a ramp by wheelbarrow into the bed of this thing, making what seemed like hundreds of trips. By 1996 when he died it only had 70K miles on it, but below the belt trim it was more lumber than metal (midwestern trucks rust!).

A little irony in that he had bought all new trim from the dealer (what we'd call NOS today) because it was showing its age, but the "new" trim was always too nice to put on the "old" truck, so it sat in the GM wrapper for a couple of decades and probably went to the dump when my mom cleaned the garage. I wonder what a full matched set of NOS trim would be worth these days?

It's a 1968 GMC 910 (Canadian version of the 1500, must be Metric). And I suppose it's what led me into the whole 67-72 truck thing no doubt!

Thanks for showing that. It's cool you came across that and we have such technology these days. I didn't take any pictures of quite a few vehicles I've had. The ones I did take pictures of I felt kinda silly doing it sometimes. I can even remember people asking why I'm taking a picture of my truck. Anyway,not sure how they came up with the 910 thing. I can see the 10 is for 1/2t,but why the 9? Is that a C in the Canadian alphabet? No,cuz then it would be 9anada,right? Just a random thing,I guess,to be different from US models.

Yeah, there are a lot of things about the old Autopac treaty and Canadian models that I don't understand. Like why they had the Beaumont but still also offered Chevelles. Why the Chevrolet truck was still a C10 but the GMC version was the 910. And so on...

My '66 Suburban has a left front fender with the '910' insignia on it.
From all appearances the fender and hood came from another vehicle as repair after a wreck... but this Suburban has been in Georgia since at least 1990.

It's always awesome to find some old pictures of cars/trucks we cared about. My guess is that 910kg is approximately 2000 lbs (910x2.2) but that doesn't make sense on a "1/2 Ton" truck. More mysteries...

On that autopac treaty,I think it had something to do with getting around export tariffs to British Empire countries. If it was a GM product built in Ontario and shipped to Australia there were no tariffs. That was the explanation I read about the old Maple Leaf Trucks.

wishI could find a pic of dad's black 71 GMC that he had to around 1989 when he sold it. I remember he bought a camper shell on it till around that time cause it was his work truck.
