Cool Engine compartment paint options

Who has an engine compartment painted something other than semi flat black? I'm looking for options on a project - post pix of what you've done.

Re: Engine compartment paint options

I've seen a number of them with gloss black inner fenders that look great and I've seen several with body colored inner fender that look great. A lot of guys still like that almost original look of the flat or no shine black though. I just wish I had enough done on my 71 that I could worry about it but it works for it's gas ration every day and doesn't sit still long enough for a cosmetic makeover. If the broke down, it's supposed to be a 30 mpg daily drive little box with wheels was running the 71 would get some stuff done to it.

Re: Engine compartment paint options

firewalls are my pet peeve i think they always need to match the outside vehicle color and as far as inner fenders and core support..... semi gloss for a factory looking truck , body colored for a custom looking truck , my 2 cents

Re: Engine compartment paint options

Mine is still a year away from paint but,,, Im going to do a three stage paint on the exterior and would love to continue the same color on the inners and core, but,,,, Its expensive paint And a lot more work than semi gloss would be-----prob. wont make the final decision till I get the gun full of paint!!

Re: Engine compartment paint options

I just went from gloss black back to satin. It just looks right to me. The gloss was too high maintenance and takes away from the engine if you're anywhere close to stock looking. Maybe for billet street machines...

Re: Engine compartment paint options

You did a great job on that Leevon. There's a place for gloss on a stock appearing engine compartment. To me it looks better than new.

Thanks all. Mike, I just finished cleaning up the engine bay and dash wiring plus tilt column in my '71. There is a link to the pseudo build thread / refresh in my sig.

Yup. Choosing colors on stuff is almost harder than anything else on a project for me.

Re: Engine compartment paint options

Well you're doing something right, she's looking pretty good. How about red and white with black chassis and fenders...there, done! Just jokin, but I am one of those weirdos who think GM did a pretty good job the first time. Let's just say you won't find me painting a truck purple or comparing color chips from the book and settling on "2012 mazda ____" LOL.

Re: Engine compartment paint options

I was always a fan of the textured black like you see on the edelbrock valve covers and air filters. I plan to do the inners and firewall like that with some SS or aluminum accents.

LOL - well, if we all did things the same it would be pretty boring. This is as close to artistic expression as I will ever get.
