Question Big block question...

I have a 68 c10 and was wondering what the best route would be to go for a 454 BBC? Also what do Ineed to do to the cab to make it fit and what transmission would be best to go with a motor with that kind of power?

You will need bbc motor mounts. I did a swap years ago and that was the only thing i needed, since these trucks came with big blocks its a pretty easy swap. You will need to check your pulley, fan, radiator and exhaust manifolds for clearance.

Thank you! Do I just need a high hump for the cab and trans will be ok? I want to make sure I have everything done I need to before I paint anything! I'm new to all this but this site has been great!

A low hump will work fine as well as a high hump. I put a 454 in mine when I was 14 yrs old and my dad was out of town. All I needed was motor mounts. Everything fits fine to me. I have my BB bolted to a turbo 400 and that gets me down the road very quickly.

The only thing I'm having trouble with, is finding a fan shroud that will fit. I tried to mock one up so it will clear my belts and alternator, but with all the sections cut on it, it really didn't work as a fan shroud anymore lol.

Your set up may be different than mine and others, but don't let anything scare you. The main thing you need is motor mounts.

Mine is a low hump, th400. The mounts have been moved back 1/2in or so to help with nose weight / transfer. Done by the previous owner.

Hmmm... I thought TH400 trucks got the high hump?

I think the biggest challenge of putting a big block in a truck that used to be a small block is all the brackets, pulleys, and accessory stuff (mounts, fuel lines, etc). It's a lot easier (or at least cheaper) if you don't require that it look original.

That is what I thought as well! I don't need it to look factory but also don't want it to look half pass thrown together!

Kwik Performance brackets and a SBC serpentine system is a great way to go with your brackets. Have all the reliability of serpentine without the big bucks. Here is mine (on a tall deck nonetheless) and the whole thing cost about 200 bucks including the accessories. Have to powdercoat all mine yet but you get the picture..

Big block trucks did in fact come with the high trans hump due to th400 trans but I have swapped bb's into a few trucks with low humps with no problem as long as the can mounts aren't worn out too badly.
I think I have finally tracked down all of the parts to swap a 454/ 700r4 for the 250 cyl and 3 ott.

72 bbc Motor mounts/ stands
68-71 bbc pulleys
68-72 BBC fan shroud
68-72 4 row radiator
68-72 bbc engine wiring harness
68-71 BBC ps and alt brackets
68-71 oil pressure gauge feed line

I just picked up a68 custom camper CST,the pervious owner swapped the 327 for a big block. The picture in post 10 has huge clearance compared to mine , I will post a pic latter,mine is super tight but lots of clearance to the firewall. I'll have to start tearing it down to see what they did .
