Should I pull this trigger????

Going to look at a 71 1/2 ton LWB this evening that is complete with the factory BB and TH400 and AC... Left rocker is rotted out, but only the outer (thats the extent of the body rot per the owner)... Motor did run per the owner but the wiring harnes is a hack job and he cant figure it out! Should I be worried or just roll the motor to make sure it is loose and free and give him the $1100 he is asking for it??? He says the starter turns the motor over but it wont fire...

Wife is not happy we may be bringing another one home, but we made a bargain on something she has been eyeing for a while as well so I have her blessings! LOL

Thinking I might put the BB into project Heaven and put the SB that is currently in Heaven into the 71 and then resale the 71... Or maybe just part it out...

Thoughts??? Concerns????

As far as the Truck goes if you are buying it just for the engine and trans then I would test each cylender for PSI individuly and see where its at, all rolling it over is going to tell you is that it isnt stuck but it could still be a boat anchor. If the engine passes muster then use the fact that the truck doesnt run to your advantage and lowball the guy start real low like $500 and try and pick it up for $800-850 and I would say you are getting a hell of a deal. Just get what you want off of the truck and get rid of the rest fast so the wife is happy LOL

Thats kind of what I was thinking! But, not sure he will go much lower than $1100 I have been chewing him down for a while! LOL

You could probably recover the $1100 but you still shouldnt pay that because it doesnt run, im just sayin get it as cheap as you can. You will have to rebuild that motor for sure, and im sure the transmission isnt like new either, the point is you just dont know because you cant drive it and the guy knows that and he will take less than $1100 for it you just have to pull out the $850 cash so he can see it and start haggling, cash is king he will take it, but just incase he gets stuck you can have an extra $150 in your pocket, but dont go up more than $50 at a time, also dont be afraid to walk away they get really motivated when you start slowly heading towards your car haha.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can determine from the VIN. You need to check the SPID and the casting number (and ideally dates) on the block to know.

Even so, the best you'll ever do is determine that the truck came with a big block and the block came in a truck, because there is no partial vin or body sequence number on the engine.

The motor is worth about $500 if its not complete junk. Add that to what the truck is worth. But don't pay a premium because they're a matched set unless (a) you can confirm it and (b) plan to keep it that way. If you're putting the motor in something else, there's no value in the original motor question anyway.

Take a 5 ft length of 12 gage wire with an alligator clip on each end and hot wire the truck from the + post or better yet the junction box next to the battery on the inner fender to the + post on the coil and see if it will start.
Also take 8 nice crisp 100's and a couple of nice crisp 50's Cash green money held out in the hand works where hems and haws and be backs don't.

You can tell if it came from the factory with a big block by looking at the VIN tag and the gross vehicle weight, as shown in this thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=471042 Says that it is for 1972, but I think it would still apply to 71??

As far as numbers matching (original to the truck) you would need the build sheet or protecto plate to prove that.

Ok so the guys wife was very bothersome but after talking to them and walking away and getting 4500 text messages I am now the savior of a 71 Chevy for the "steep" price of $500! I basically told them I didn't need the truck and without being able to hear it run that's all it was worth to me which was the truth. now if I can ever figure out how to do pics from my phone you all can see it!

Here are some more pics of the truck with it nestled safely at my workshop. The SPID does list it as a factory big block so it might very well be a 396 under that hood where the PO thought was a 402. I will run the numbers on the block and verify. Oh and the guy threw in a trunk full of extra parts for the truck. I will go through that tomorrow and see what all is in it, but there is another Quadrajet carb in it (supposed to be the original one) and the power steering pump and brackets.

Plans for this truck: The drivetrain in this truck is coming out, being rebuilt, stuffed under the hood of the 67 and then the rest of it will be parted out minus a few things that I need off of it for the 67...
