Re: Vin tag problem
I don't think it's legal to sell the rivets. There were several sellers 5 years ago, not sure there are any now.

Re: Vin tag problem
Here’s information I pulled from various threads on the topic, and from a VIN tag expert:
The 1950’s-64 VIN tags were SPOT WELDED in place on the Chevy and probably the GMC. The two holes in the door jamb were originally used to locate the tag, not for attachment with rivets. Tags had dimples in them which were lined up over the jamb holes, and hit with a spot welder. So if you have a 1964 earlier vehicle and the tag has come off or been detached it should be spot welded or reattached with JB Weld. Both type of rivets (round and rosette) were used randomly through about the middle of the 1965 model year, then the rosette rivet was used exclusively. The DD stamping started in 1964 and meant dealer destination. It was supposed to be filled in by the dealership, but seldom was. There are also endless threads on the internet regarding the legality of removing the VIN tag for any reason. Some say it’s illegal period. Others point to various Federal laws indicating it is legal as long as there is no intent to defraud, such as restoration or collision damage. It is also noted that State laws vary and some support restoration removal/reinstallation while others do not. To be 100% legal the best suggestion is don’t remove the tag for any reason.

Re: Vin tag problem
I would contact your local DMV or LEO and see what they say. As a way to protect the VIN tag, put a piece of masking tape over it, and then a couple layers of good heavy duct tape. Not the cheap thin stuff. The duct tape will protect it from blasting damage and the masking tape will make it easier to remove the duct tape.
