finally...got me a truck...1949

I have had a few trucks in the past but have never held on to them. Now that I am finally in a place where I can do what I want and dont plan on moving I have finally picked up my next project. My new to me 1949 short box.

I just picked it up yesterday. Plans are to leave the body alone because I want the patina/natural look. Plans are to bag it and drag it. Of course I will v8 swap it with something simple like a vortec 5.3 and make the interior comfortable.

That is a nice truck. The side mounted spare tire didn't get offered until 53 so some parts have been changed. Also nice find on the factory radio. Those are worth big bucks.

Re: finally...got me a truck...1949

It's a good start but I'd say the cab is a 51, the bed is 53 and without looking at the shocks it's hard to tell what the rest of the truck is.
Make sure that the numbers on the truck match the title. Either the engine block number or the cab number on the driver's door post. If the engine number matches the title don't get rid of that block if you do an engine swap. Stick it in the shed or under the bench until you get the paper work straightened out to reflect an engine change. No one may ever question it but if you do run into a situation where the vin is questioned having the original block with that vin on it will save a lot more headaches than then getting rid of it because it always seemed to be in the way will.

I can't knock it though as I think there is only one piece of my truck that I started out with in 1973 and that may be the left front fender.

As they get damaged or worn out parts on these trucks get changed and not alway with the same exact year model of replacement parts.

After he rolled his 48 One ton in the early 60's my grandfather had the original door on the passenger side and a 52/53 pushbutton door with vent wing on the drivers side. I pushed the cab back out and put the door on when I was 14 or 15 and helped him rebuild the flatbed and soak it with several gallons of linseed oil.

Nice looking truck. Like the patina a lot.

Like the rest of the boys said, have to believe it isn't a '49 due to the vented windows and the push button handles. Or someone just put the doors on for a swap.

@mr48chev: How do you know the bed is probably a '53?

The cab and doors tell me it is a 51 to 53. looks like a good start.

Yea guys I have no idea why I said it was a 49...it is a 53. I have looked at so many trucks this week they have all been running together.

Re: finally...got me a truck...1949

A couple friends and I managed to get the engine/trans pulled this weekend. Finally found a use for one of my 345/30/19in viper tires that I have been holding on to...

Also picked up an early 80s c10 front end for my swap.

getting everything torn down for test fitment.

looks awesome! I remember you responded to my post. I have my free donor frame all lined up as soon as the dude takes the cab off the frame is mine! how much did you narrow it?

Re: finally...got me a truck...1949

Chris, i measured, then measured again, and then measured one last time haha. On my subframe I removed roughly 1 1/4 inches from the center. I followed the instructions in the link that was provided in your thread although that link said 1 5/8 inches. Next on the list is to rebuild the c10 front end with new ball joints, bushings, wheel bearing and drop spindles.

Re: finally...got me a truck...1949

thanks for the info, let me know how the steering goes because it seems like if you've narrowed it the stock C10 steering components are going to need alot of modifying. keep up the good work!

Probably life, that's the way it goes. I'm betting he'll be back at it before you know it. Just remember, it's not when you get it done, just that you get it done.
