Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

Seems like I saw one of these stuffed in to an early International p/u even had custom valve covers with the international script milled into it.
It was cool.
Horsepower is cool
Going fast is cool
Go for it!

no twin is referring to two turbos not the size. For that matter you should say parallel or sequential setups

It threw me off how you used it, we always referred to them as sequential when they were different size, twin when the same. Regional dialect I guess.

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

I use to have a rb25det in a 240sx and if i had to do it over i would have done a ls1 swap,The engine is heavy pricey to buy only parts you can pick up at a parts store is a coil packs the vg30 used the same ones anything else is order and wait.If you really want to do it try talking to mckinneymotorsports.com i think they use to make a adapter to run a gm auto trans.

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

Now why would you wanna go with a 2.6L with no local parts availability, when GM has an I6 that displaces 4.2L....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Atlas_engine

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ec_inline_six/

And yes, that was a 9 second run in a station wagon

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

Let's be honest 4.2 is a fail next to the rb series. Also modified parts for any motor outside the 350 is order and wait. Dollars to donuts bet on the RB, think about how much better these engines flow to make 500hp on 2.6/2.5L

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

How is a 9 second pass a failure?

Read the car craft article about the Firebird. That guy makes 470HP and 450TQ on just 8 pounds of boost on a stock long block.

These engines we're installed every soccer mom's Trailblazer for quite a few years. They are piles of these engines around with low miles, and they can be had cheap.

The 4.2L with it's larger displacement will make more torque and be much more streetable, especially in a 4000+ pound truck.

Second, the small block chevy 350 is not the only GM engine with aftermarket support. You're forgetting the LS engines and the big blocks. Very easy to get parts for these. Also, if you've got the coin you can even get into NASCAR parts and engines. Even the discontinued Buick, Olds, and Pontiac stuff is easy to do and they haven't made these motors for a long time now.

I won't go so far as to say the RB series is a failure, it's definitely not. Remember in Tokyo Drift, they did the swap because it made sense and it's what they had. They probably couldn't have laid their hands on a Ford V8 if their lives depended on it, at least not in time to race with DK anyway.

And here's a Tokyo Drift kind of story with a twist...

A rb is roughly half the displacement. It will be streetable depends on the set-up. I would push a stock rb past 500hp but would fear doing that to a 4.2L. But I do like a 4.2 because it a underdog.
I understand the rb is way past different so it should be done. I want to put a Toyota 5.7 in my 76 vette but funds and support are too limited right now

I think a 6.0 makes more sense. But I like wierd stuff so why not? You can always pull it out and stuff it in a F@£D.

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

At what RPM does a 2.6L engine make 500hp?? More importantly where is the torque band? What kind of HP/TQ does this small I6 make from idle to 3000rpm?

I can't tell you right off top I will find out tomorrow, but torque was in the fours. the power cure is mid to high. but remember that's his setup you can change your power band in your setup and tune.

There's a guy over on the thirdgen camaro forums putting a duramax in a thirdgen so a skyline motor in a square body seems 'okay' as long as its not a ford motor... lol

Re: Nissan RB26DETT in a square body

A rb26dett fully dressed weights 573lbs a ls1 is 430lbs fully dressed A gm small block iron block heads and intake is about 575lbs.Any small block from the big 3 gm ford mopar will have speed parts over the counter at a speed shop.Dollar pre hp you can't beat a gm small block,I understand you want to be different why not use a diesel or even the 3800 stage 2 with the blower of a gtp it will change over to rwd.

If you want to be different, just drop in a zz 502 with twin turbos. With that setup you could mess with Lamborghini's and Ferrari's in a square body.

You don't think a truck weighing 4000 lbs with a 1000 hp 1600 lbs of torque couldn't mess with a car weighing 3500 lbs and 600 hp?

Exactly. Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races. That 2.6L may make a peak 500 HP, but when you look curves from the dyno graph you will quickly see that what you gained on top was lost on bottom.

I hate to bring up the too often told story of the 800HP Supra that impressed people with it's dyno sheets but couldn't beat a stock mustang at the track, but it's true. These motor are impressive for what they are, but there's only so much streetable power you can get out of a given displacement on pump gas, no matter what name is on the valve cover.

The 4.2L is only 1.6L larger than 2.6L...a whole 1L off is quite a rough margin from half.

I think it's pretty impressive that the Vortec 4200 can be taken to 500HP on stock cast pistons. It's always been an NA motor, never boosted. The RB turbo engines were turbo motors from day one and have as much iron as a small block 350 so I'm not surprised that it holds together at higher numbers.

I realize the Vortec 4200 has only soccer mom lineage behind it rather than super car lineage, but they really are a diamond in the rough with a ton of potential and that's what makes them cheap. Ultimately however, most people go LS 5.3/6.0/6.2 for big boosted power, but that's a whole different can of worms.

Okay first it's a rb not a 2jz. People with supras like to dyno race. This 2.5 is making usable power I've driven the several times plus it a stick no stall converter on 91. And that mustang had better be a GT500 or better. It does not matter if you make torque at idle you will never be there in a race.

Bottom line rb's are hot for a reason, the outflow most of the engines out there.
You should do an RB if you like it will be kick @ss and make decent power with minor mods i.e. 450+HP

On a dollar per HP basis I don't think you can beat a 6.0/4l80e combo for a 400-500hp build. If you just want to be different...by all means RB it. They are great engines. I would love to have one in my 240z.
